Manu Bhaker, a double Olympic medallist, has recently shared a message on social media urging young individuals to refrain from using abusive language. She emphasised that the words people choose reflect their personality and that “using bad language is not cool.” Bhaker posted her message on X on a Sunday, without specifying any particular incident, but highlighted the increasing prevalence of abusive language in daily conversations.
The 23-year-old shooter, who secured two medals at the Paris Olympics, stressed the importance of choosing words carefully. She explained that a person’s character is shaped over time by their thoughts, speech, and practices. Bhaker stated, “The language we choose reflects our personality and the kind of person we are. Choose your words wisely, because over time, you become what you think, what you speak, and what you practice.” She reiterated that “Using bad language is not cool. Abusing is not cool.”
Bhaker also clarified her definition of being “cool,” asserting that it has no connection to abusive language. She described coolness as being hardworking, kind, respectful towards others and oneself, striving for success through honesty, and making one’s parents and country proud. She concluded, “That’s cool.”
The normalisation of abusive language
Bhaker later elaborated on her decision to speak out on this issue. She noted that abusive language has gradually become normalised, particularly among younger generations. She observed a shift in how such language is perceived, with many now considering it “cool.”
She expressed concern that people are casually using degrading and disrespectful language in everyday interactions without fully realising its impact. Her message aimed to draw attention to this normalisation and encourage more thoughtful communication.
In a separate message, Bhaker, a two-time Olympic medal-winning shooter, urged people to spread love and avoid hate. She encouraged social media influencers to act responsibly, reduce toxicity, and promote positivity. Bhaker, who shares glimpses of her life on Instagram with her 1.4 million followers, posted a reel with a serious tone, addressing the irreverent use of social media, especially by influencers.
She highlighted the unpredictable nature of life and appealed for kindness among people. Bhaker pointed out that social media is accessible to everyone, including the younger generation, who learn significantly from it. Therefore, she stressed the importance of providing positive influences.
While acknowledging that some influencers are doing good work, Bhaker also noted the presence of others who are overly critical and make negative comments. She questioned the necessity of such negativity, stating that no one has succeeded by trying to pull others down. She added that negative comments can either build or break a person. From a personal perspective, she finds it rewarding when people offer support during both good and challenging times. Bhaker recently won a bronze medal in the 25m pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Hangzhou, China.
Manu Bhaker made history at the Paris Olympics 2024 by becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-Independence era to win two medals at a single Olympic Games. She secured a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event and another bronze in the 10m air pistol mixed team event.
