Marsh joins Sunrisers Eastern Cape, Curran to Durban’s Super Giants for SA20 Season 5
Key Player Movements Confirmed
The upcoming SA20 season is set to feature several prominent T20 players, with Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, Jason Holder, and Phil Salt joining various franchises. The six teams have confirmed their pre-auction retentions and signings in preparation for the new edition of the tournament.
Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have finalized their 19-player squads before the auction. This leaves 19 slots still available across the remaining four teams.
Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s T20 captain, is expected to make his SA20 debut for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who are three-time champions. Marsh will join a batting lineup that includes Quinton de Kock, Matthew Breetzke, Jordan Hermann, and captain Tristan Stubbs.
Sam Curran, who previously played for MI Cape Town in the first two seasons, will now represent Durban’s Super Giants. He will be teaming up with his England teammate Jos Buttler. Meanwhile, Joe Root, England’s returning Test captain, will return to Boland Park for another season with the Paarl Royals, where he previously formed an opening partnership with Lhuan-dre Pretorius.
Squad Additions and Departures
The runners-up from last season, Pretoria Capitals, have strengthened their top order with the additions of Phil Salt and Australian international Matt Short. Salt, who has played for the Capitals before, will reunite with Short, as they currently open together for Welsh Fire in The Hundred. This duo is expected to add power to a batting lineup that already features Dewald Brevis, Sherfane Rutherford, Andre Russell, and Connor Esterhuizen.
England all-rounder Will Jacks, after three seasons with the Capitals, has moved south to MI Cape Town. This move completes the trio of MI franchises for Jacks, who has also played for the Mumbai Indians in the IPL and is currently with the MI London setup in The Hundred.
Jason Holder, an MLC-winning captain, will join the Joburg Super Kings. The Super Kings are seeking a new captain after the departure of Faf du Plessis, who led the side for its first four seasons. Among other notable releases is England wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow, who previously formed an opening partnership with Quinton de Kock for the Sunrisers.
MI Cape Town has also parted ways with players such as Trent Boult, Rassie van der Dussen, and Kieron Pollard. Additionally, Wiaan Mulder and Nandre Burger, who were marquee signings for the Super Kings, will enter the auction pool.
Looking Ahead to Season 5
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith commented on the upcoming season, stating that it is shaping up to be the strongest yet. He highlighted that attracting players of the caliber of Mitchell Marsh, Joe Root, Sam Curran, and Phil Salt demonstrates the growing appeal of the league on the global stage. Smith also expressed excitement about seeing these international players alongside South Africa’s international and domestic stars.
Smith noted that most franchises are heading into the auction with the majority of their squads already secured, which he believes reflects the stability and consistency built within the league. He concluded that this setup promises a highly competitive Season 5.
The Super Kings and MI Cape Town are expected to be active at the auction, needing to sign seven and six players respectively. The Capitals have five vacant slots to fill. All six teams have filled their overseas pre-signing slots, and the Super Kings will be eligible for a wildcard pick.
Season 5 of the SA20 is scheduled to commence on Sunday, January 17, at St George’s Park. The opening match will be a repeat of last season’s final, with the Sunrisers taking on the Capitals.
