Trent Rockets secure top spot
The Trent Rockets women’s team has secured a place in the latter stages of The Hundred competition after achieving their fourth consecutive victory. This win against Birmingham Phoenix at Trent Bridge propelled them to the top of the women’s table, effectively guaranteeing their qualification for the knockout rounds.
Sophia Dunkley played a pivotal role in the Rockets’ success, delivering her third consecutive fifty. She scored 65 off 37 balls, further extending her lead at the top of the run-scoring charts. Her performance was instrumental in chasing down a target of 123 with 16 balls to spare.
Despite losing key players like Nat Sciver-Brunt for 24 and Ash Gardner to consecutive balls, the home side maintained their momentum. Kim Garth was a notable performer with the ball, taking 4-23.
Phoenix’s qualification hopes diminish
For Birmingham Phoenix, the defeat significantly impacted their chances of advancing to the knockout stages. This marks their third loss in five matches, severely denting their qualification hopes. Earlier in the match, Davina Perrin, a 19-year-old talent, started energetically for Phoenix, scoring 18 off 13 balls. However, her dismissal by Kim Garth highlighted the team’s recurring batting struggles.
Alice Capsey’s challenging tournament continued as she was bowled for one by Charley Phillips (1-22). Ellyse Perry also departed for the same score, with Ash Gardner (1-30) and Beth Mooney combining for her dismissal. Welsh Fire boost their chances
In another match, Welsh Fire enhanced their qualification prospects with a three-wicket victory over Manchester Super Giants. This win was largely due to an impressive bowling display at Emirates Old Trafford, where Fire’s attack restricted the Super Giants to just 85-9. Of these runs, 14 came from the last six balls of their 100-ball innings.
Orla Prendergast, representing Ireland and stepping in for New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, was a standout performer for Fire, claiming figures of 4-18. These figures represent the best bowling performance in the women’s competition this year. Despite the low target, Fire faced some challenges in their chase, losing seven wickets before securing the win with nine balls to spare.
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone’s excellent figures of 3-14 were not enough to turn the tide for Manchester. This result moves Welsh Fire to 12 points, placing them fourth in the table, two points behind their opponents with two games remaining. Southern Brave and Trent Rockets are nearly assured of the top two positions, leaving one spot open for the women’s eliminator.
The Trent Rockets women’s team has been seeking their first title in The Hundred, having not won a championship in the first five seasons. Their improved performance in the ongoing Hundred Women’s 2026 season has seen them climb to the second spot on the ladder with 16 points, positioning them well for the next round. They had won three consecutive matches before this latest victory, which has now placed them at the top of the table.
The upcoming schedule for Thursday includes a double-header in London, featuring a capital city derby. The London Spirit women’s team will host MI London from 3pm, followed by the men’s teams squaring off from 6:30pm.
