FIFA’s Stance on VAR Intervention
FIFA has publicly supported the decision to send off Switzerland‘s Breel Embolo during the 2026 World Cup quarter-final match against Argentina. The world governing body stated that the intervention of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the incident was consistent with an approved interpretation of the “mistaken identity” clause. This defense comes despite the controversy surrounding the incident and comments made by the International Football Association Board (IFAB).
A spokesperson for FIFA, quoted on the platform “X,” clarified that the organization’s interpretation of mistaken identity was applied uniformly throughout the World Cup. The spokesperson highlighted two instances where a player was incorrectly identified as having committed an offense warranting a yellow card. In these cases, the video referee advised the main referee to correct the factual error that resulted from an opponent’s simulation.
The spokesperson further elaborated that simulation itself should not be questioned, and it should not lead to disciplinary action against an opponent that could have additional consequences. Such consequences could include a sending-off due to a second yellow card or a suspension resulting from accumulated cards. FIFA does not consider the decision in question to be an error by either the referee or the Video Assistant Referee, viewing it instead as a correction made in the interest of justice.
IFAB’s Reception and Referee’s Perspective
FIFA acknowledged IFAB‘s comments in its circular and confirmed ongoing communication with the board. IFAB has reportedly confirmed that this interpretation is correct and has been well received. This interpretation is also slated for discussion during the review of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology protocol, a topic addressed at the most recent annual general meeting.
Joao Pinheiro, the Portuguese referee who officiated the quarter-final match, also provided his perspective on the incident. He explained that his officiating team initially believed the Argentine player had committed a booking-worthy offense. However, a review of the play revealed there was no foul and that Embolo had simulated the contact. Pinheiro stated that since it was Embolo‘s second yellow card, it resulted in a sending-off. He added that if it had been the first yellow, the decision would have been the same, viewing the changes introduced by FIFA positively for correcting such actions.
Match Incident and Player Reactions
The incident involving Embolo occurred early in the second half of the quarter-final between Argentina and Switzerland. Embolo went down without any contact from Leandro Paredes, leading Referee Pinheiro to initially award a foul against the Argentine player and book him. The video referee then intervened, and after reviewing the play, determined that Embolo had simulated being fouled. Consequently, Paredes‘ caution was rescinded, and the card was transferred to the Swiss forward. This was Embolo‘s second yellow card of the match, leading to his dismissal in the 72nd minute.
At the time of the red card, the score was level at 1-1. Argentina capitalized on having an extra man, scoring two goals in extra time to secure a 3-1 victory and advance to the semi-final. A similar incident had previously occurred during the group stage match between Paraguay and the United States, where Paraguay‘s Miguel Almiron was also cautioned for attempting to deceive the referee.
The match also featured a discussion between Pinheiro and Lionel Messi. Messi reportedly asked the referee to speak to him respectfully. Pinheiro downplayed the exchange, noting that it is not uncommon for captains to engage with referees and that new rules permit such dialogue. He suggested that the visibility of the exchange was amplified because it involved Messi, stating that similar situations involving players like Cristiano Ronaldo often receive more attention. Pinheiro views these conversations as healthy and believes they can help manage matches without excessive use of cards, recalling his participation in the World Cup.
