Stirling returns to lead Ireland
Paul Stirling is set to captain Ireland in the upcoming five-game One-Day International (ODI) series against Afghanistan. His return follows a period of recovery from injury. This series marks the first matches under the guidance of new head coach Gary Wilson, who took over after Heinrich Malan.
Stirling’s comeback is seen as a significant boost for the Irish squad, especially as they prepare for their first ODI series in over a year. He is known for his consistent performances across different formats of the game, and his leadership is expected to strengthen both the batting line-up and the overall team dynamic.
The series will commence with two matches at Bready on 5 August and 7 August. The action will then move to Stormont for the final three games, scheduled for 10 August, 12 August, and 15 August. These matches will serve as preparation for the 2027 World Cup qualifiers, which are slated for early next year.
New talent and coaching era
Alongside Stirling’s return, the squad will feature new faces receiving their first ODI call-ups. Jai Moondra, Ben Calitz, and Byron McDonough have all earned places in the 14-member squad. Moondra and Calitz previously made an impression during Ireland’s T20I series victory against India, showcasing their abilities under pressure.
McDonough, a fast bowler, also earned his call-up after strong performances in the recent Inter-Provincial 50-over Cup, where he played a role in Leinster Lightning securing the title. Their inclusion highlights Cricket Ireland’s focus on developing new talent and rewarding strong domestic performances.
The series against Afghanistan also signals the beginning of a new coaching era with Gary Wilson at the helm. Wilson, a former Ireland wicketkeeper, expressed his enthusiasm for the squad selection, stating that it reflects the aggressive and positive style of cricket the team aims to play. He noted the healthy competition for places within the squad, with many players impressing during the 15-month gap since Ireland’s last ODIs.
Wilson highlighted the strong rivalry that has developed between Ireland and Afghanistan over the years, anticipating another closely contested series. He emphasized the team’s desire to consistently seek wickets with the ball and to demonstrate a “never say die attitude” in the field, a characteristic he believes is synonymous with successful Irish teams.

Squad depth tested by injuries
Despite the positive news of Stirling’s return and the introduction of new talent, Ireland will face the series with several key players sidelined due to injuries. Josh Little, Matt Hollard, Craig Young, Barry McCarthy, Jordan Neil, and David Delany are all unavailable for selection. Hollard, who had a notable T20 series against India, is among those missing Wilson’s initial games in charge.
However, the squad does see the return of bowler Mark Adair and all-rounder Curtis Campher, both of whom missed the series against India due to injuries. Stirling himself is returning from a calf problem, having previously stepped down from the T20 captaincy after this year’s World Cup.
The absence of several experienced players will test the depth of Ireland’s bowling attack and provide opportunities for younger players to step up. The blend of experienced campaigners such as Andrew Balbirnie, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, and George Dockrell, combined with the enthusiasm of the newcomers, is expected to be crucial against a talented Afghanistan side.
The full Ireland squad for the series includes: Paul Stirling (captain), Mark Adair, Andrew Balbirnie, Ben Calitz, Curtis Campher, Cade Carmichael, George Dockrell, Gavin Hoey, Andrew McBrine, Liam McCarthy, Byron McDonough, Jai Moondra, Harry Tector, and Lorcan Tucker.
