Manchester Super Giants secured a four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Leeds at Headingley, maintaining their unbeaten start to The Hundred women’s competition. The win was largely propelled by an unbeaten innings of 88 runs off 50 balls from Smriti Mandhana.
Mandhana, an opener for India, delivered her highest score in the tournament’s history, which included seven fours and four sixes. Her composed approach was crucial as Manchester Super Giants successfully chased a target of 143 runs, despite losing wickets around her.
Mandhana’s Decisive Performance
The left-handed batter’s unflappable temperament was a key factor in the chase. Mandhana kept her team in contention with the required run rate throughout their innings. She later accelerated, needing 16 runs off the final 10 balls.
Her decisive hitting included a slog-sweep for six off Jess Jonassen, a shot that Darcey Carter was unable to hold at deep mid-wicket. Mandhana followed this by hitting the Australian spinner over the ropes again. The victory was sealed in style on the first ball of the final set, when she dispatched Annabel Sutherland for another six.
Mandhana commented on her innings, stating the importance of “just committing to the shot” and “not playing anything half-heartedly.” She also noted that winning such matches “really puts us in a good place” and that in franchise cricket, one must “keep your head down and keep going taking the good days with bad days.”
The significance of Mandhana’s knock was highlighted by the fact that Super Giants captain Meg Lanning, who scored 24, was the only other player to reach double figures for her team.
Sunrisers’ Innings and Bowling Efforts
Earlier in the match, Annabel Sutherland was the top scorer for Sunrisers Leeds, contributing a controlled 35 runs off 24 balls, which included four fours. Her efforts helped Sunrisers post a total of 142 for 4.
Other notable contributions to the Sunrisers’ innings came from Bryony Smith and Phoebe Litchfield, who scored 26 and 31 runs respectively. Dani Gibson provided a late boost to the innings, clubbing 18 runs off just six balls.
Among the Super Giants’ bowlers, Grace Ballinger was the most economical, conceding only 17 runs from her 20 wicketless balls. However, spinner Sophie Ecclestone had a challenging day, giving away 30 runs from her allocation, while fellow England international Ryana MacDonald-Gay conceded six runs more.
The Sunrisers’ bowling attack initially appeared to be in a strong position, taking four wickets for 10 runs at one point, leaving the Super Giants at 71-5 after being 61-2. However, Mandhana’s resilience proved too much. A crucial moment occurred 91 balls into the chase when Mandhana was dropped on the boundary by Darcey Carter when she was on 71 runs.

This victory preserves the Super Giants’ unbeaten record in the tournament, placing them second in The Hundred table with 10 points. For Sunrisers Leeds, this marks their second loss, leaving them fifth with four points.
The Hundred competition continues with double-headers scheduled for Wednesday in Cardiff and London. At Sophia Gardens, Welsh Fire’s women’s team will face Trent Rockets at 11:30 BST, followed by the men’s teams at 15:00 BST. Both home teams will be looking to build on their positive starts to the campaign.
Meanwhile, The Oval will host a derby day, with MI London’s women’s team playing against London Spirit at 15:00 BST. The men’s fixture will then commence at 18:30 BST, as both sides aim to gain early momentum in the race for the knockout stages.
