Gianni Infantino, the president of Fifa, has strongly criticised those who have been vocal about the recent World Cup, accusing them of disseminating negativity and inaccurate information. He defended the tournament, which was hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico, as a triumph of unity, safety, and inclusivity.
In a detailed message shared on social media, Infantino suggested that critics were too focused on negativity to appreciate the widespread joy and camaraderie experienced by millions globally during the event. He stated that while critics were behind their screens, Fifa was actively organising and delivering what he described as the best show in the world.
Addressing Criticisms and Controversies
The World Cup faced various criticisms, including issues with US visa restrictions that impacted supporters and officials from several nations, as well as concerns for teams from regions affected by conflict. Infantino’s message followed scrutiny over Fifa‘s decision to suspend an automatic one-match ban for USA striker Folarin Balogun, a decision that reportedly came after intervention from Donald Trump. Officiating decisions in Argentina‘s match against Egypt also drew criticism, particularly from Egypt manager Hossam Hassan.
Infantino addressed these officiating decisions, stating that potentially incorrect red or yellow cards, or subsequent decisions not to ban players in certain situations, are routine and widely accepted in some of the world’s major leagues. He expressed surprise that the same countries employing these practices were among those criticising them.
Regarding visa issues, Omar Artan, a Somali referee, was reportedly denied entry to the US despite holding a valid visa. Additionally, the Iran team and staff faced travel restrictions imposed by the US government. Infantino highlighted that Iran entered the United States without incident, emphasising that football promotes peace over politics. He also noted that other countries facing health issues or challenges were granted visas, underscoring football’s role in bringing hope and joy.
Reactions to Infantino’s Statement
Infantino’s extensive statement has drawn further criticism. FairSquare, a human rights organisation, suggested that his remarks indicate he is out of touch with public opinion. Nicholas McGeehan, director and co-founder of FairSquare, commented that Infantino’s statement further demonstrates his unsuitability to lead world football, suggesting he is surrounded by agreeable individuals within the organisation and disconnected from his unpopularity outside of it.
FairSquare lodged a formal complaint against Infantino with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), alleging a breach of its charter due to his failure to maintain political neutrality, specifically citing expressions of support for the US president. Infantino has been a member of the IOC since 2020. However, the IOC announced that it would not investigate the complaint, stating it fell outside the jurisdiction of its ethics commission.
Infantino concluded his message by expressing pride in his contribution to the event and calling for football to rise above all forms of hatred. He urged critics to reflect or watch a football match to observe the joy and emotions it generates.
He also celebrated the performances of teams from smaller nations, noting their ability to bring pride and hope, demonstrating that anyone can achieve success in the game regardless of their origin. Infantino described the World Cup as a celebration of love, tolerance, and unity.
