India secures top T20I ranking
India has returned to the number one position in the ICC Men’s T20I Team rankings. This achievement follows their unassailable 2-0 lead in the series against Zimbabwe in Harare. The team, current ICC Men’s T20 World Cup champions, reclaimed the top spot from England.
England had previously taken the top ranking after securing a 4-0 T20I series victory at home. India‘s strong performance in Zimbabwe has now seen them regain their leading position in the international rankings.
Batting performances drive series success
In the second T20I against Zimbabwe, India‘s batters played a crucial role. This followed a dominant win in the first T20I, which was heavily influenced by the bowlers and a record-setting innings by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. After losing two early wickets in the second match, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer formed a 66-run partnership. Tilak Varma then contributed a notable knock of 60 runs from 29 balls.
Kishan was the highest scorer in that game, making 81 runs from 44 balls. He commented on the team’s approach, stating that as a batter at number three, the job is to observe the ball and play naturally. He also mentioned the importance of understanding the wicket conditions, with discussions around target scores ranging from 170-180 to 230-250 runs. Kishan highlighted the partnership with Shreyas Iyer, aiming to build momentum and extend the innings, noting that their plans were executed effectively.
Zimbabwe, chasing a target of 220, lost five wickets within the first nine overs and were eventually bowled out for 129. This result secured India‘s unassailable lead in the T20I series. The two teams were scheduled to play again on July 26, Sunday.
Sooryavanshi’s record-breaking feat
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi continued to set new records in men’s international cricket. The left-handed opener became the first player to achieve multiple scores of 50 or more before turning 16. He accomplished this feat during the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday.
In this match, Sooryavanshi scored 81 runs from 48 balls, helping India reach a total of 192/5 after they elected to bat first. Previously, only Nepal‘s Kushal Malla had recorded a 50-plus score in men’s internationals before turning 16. Sooryavanshi now holds two such scores.
On a pitch that provided assistance to the bowlers, Sooryavanshi displayed a versatile batting style. He started cautiously, scoring 11 runs from his first 10 balls and 26 from his first 20 deliveries, before reaching his second T20I fifty in 31 balls. His innings featured trademark strokeplay, including driving Brad Evans for a boundary off a yorker and hitting a 102-metre six off off-spinner Sikandar Raza. He also executed a reverse-sweep for a boundary against Wesley Madhevere.
During his innings, Sooryavanshi added 75 runs for the second wicket with Ishan Kishan, who scored 29. He then formed a 50-run partnership with captain Shreyas Iyer, who contributed 27 runs. Sooryavanshi‘s innings concluded at 81 when Wesley Madhevere dismissed him, with Brad Evans completing the catch at long-off.
Following the departures of Sooryavanshi and Shreyas, India‘s scoring rate slowed. The middle order managed to add only 47 runs in the final five overs. Rinku Singh‘s 25 runs from 14 balls helped India approach the 200-run mark, ultimately finishing on 192/5, a total considered competitive on a bowler-friendly surface.
Meanwhile, opening partner Abhishek Sharma‘s recent run of low scores continued. He edged Blessing Muzarabani to wicketkeeper Tadi Marumani for two runs. His last six innings, dating back to the third T20I against England in Nottingham last month, have yielded scores of 10, 16, 3, 1, 8, and 2.
