Glasgow: Mirabai Chanu secures third Commonwealth Games gold as India adds three medals

Commonwealth Games 2026 Day 4: Mirabai Chanu completes golden hat-trick as India adds 3 more medals in Glasgow

India experienced its most successful day to date at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing one gold and two silver medals. This brought the nation’s total medal count to four. Boxers continued their strong performances, and the men’s swimming relay team reached another Commonwealth final.

Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic silver medallist, was a highlight of India’s Day 4 achievements, earning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal. Additionally, Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi each secured silver medals in weightlifting.

Chanu’s Golden Hat-trick

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu reinforced her standing as a prominent Indian weightlifter by winning the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category. The 31-year-old athlete set new Commonwealth and Commonwealth Games records in the snatch discipline. She also established new CWG marks in both the clean and jerk and the total lift categories.

Chanu achieved a combined lift of 190kg, including an 85kg snatch and a 105kg clean and jerk. Her performance included setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 85kg in the snatch before successfully lifting 105kg in the clean and jerk, which comfortably secured her the title. This victory marks a hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals for Chanu, following her wins in Gold Coast in 2018 and Birmingham in 2022. This brings her overall Commonwealth Games medal tally to four.

Despite an initial unsuccessful attempt at 82kg in the snatch, Chanu quickly recovered her form. Similarly, in the clean and jerk, she overcame an initial failed attempt to successfully lift 105kg on her second try, securing the gold and breaking records. With the gold medal confirmed, Chanu opted not to take her third attempt, reportedly with the upcoming Asian Games in mind.

Weightlifting Silvers and Boxing Progress

Rishikanta Singh Chanambam delivered a notable performance, earning a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. The 28-year-old lifter from Manipur successfully lifted 116kg, 119kg, and 121kg in the snatch, with his best effort matching the Commonwealth Games record. He then lifted 143kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a total lift of 264kg. Malaysia’s Muhammad Anik bin Kasdan secured gold with a Games-record total of 273kg, while Kenya’s Joshua Amunga Buoya took bronze with 260kg.

Raja Muthupandi contributed to India’s weightlifting medal count by securing a silver medal in the men’s 65kg category. The lifter from Tamil Nadu recorded 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk, achieving a combined total of 286kg. Malaysia’s Muhamad Aznil Bin Bidin won gold with a Commonwealth Games record total of 299kg, and Papua New Guinea’s Morea Baru claimed bronze with 282kg. This silver medal marks a return to the Commonwealth Games podium for Muthupandi, who finished sixth in 2018 and missed the 2022 event due to injury.

In boxing, Jadumani Singh Mandengbam advanced to the quarter-finals of the men’s 55kg category by defeating Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman with a unanimous 5-0 decision. After a close first round, Singh gained control, scoring a knockdown in the second round. He is scheduled to face England’s Ellis Trowbridge in the quarter-finals. Preeti Pawar also moved to the quarter-finals in the women’s 54kg category, securing a stoppage win against Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje. However, Aditya Pratap Yadav experienced a setback, losing to Uganda’s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg Round of 16 by a 3-2 split decision.

The team recorded a time of 7:39.48, placing behind Australia and England, and progressed as the sixth-fastest team overall. The same quartet later competed in the medal race, finishing sixth in the Commonwealth Games final.

In lawn bowls, India faced challenges. Rupa Rani Tirkey and Pinki Singh lost to Namibia in a women’s pairs sectional play tiebreak and subsequently to England, ending their campaign. In men’s singles, Putul Sonowal lost his sectional play match against Malta’s Shaun James Parnis. Artistic gymnast Tapan Mohanty finished 15th in the men’s all-around final.
