Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA following their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final victory over England. During post-match celebrations, players displayed a banner supporting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands. The incident occurred after Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback win against Thomas Tuchel‘s England side in Atlanta, booking their place in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain.
After the final whistle, Argentina‘s players were seen celebrating with a banner that read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine.” This action has drawn attention from world football’s governing body, as similar incidents have led to penalties in the past.
Historical context of the dispute
The Falkland Islands are a British overseas territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean. However, Argentina has consistently asserted its sovereignty over the islands. This long-standing dispute led to a 74-day war between the two nations, which took place from April to June 1982. The conflict resulted in significant casualties, with 655 Argentine servicemen, 255 British servicemen, and three islanders losing their lives.
This is not the first instance where Argentina has faced repercussions for displaying messages related to the Falkland Islands. In 2014, FIFA imposed a fine of £20,000 on the Argentine Football Association. This fine was issued after players exhibited a banner carrying the same message before a friendly match against Slovenia. At that time, FIFA ruled that such an act violated its regulations concerning political action and team misconduct.
The semi-final match itself, which saw England concede late goals to Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, was held under heightened security measures. These precautions were implemented due to the historical tensions between the two nations, underscoring the sensitive nature of their relationship.
Political reactions and team stance
Following Argentina‘s victory, Vice-President Victoria Villarruel celebrated the outcome on social media. She stated that “it wasn’t just another match” and included a video that appeared to show Argentine soldiers. Villarruel later reiterated her stance, posting, “The Falklands are Argentine. They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.” Prior to the semi-final, Villarruel had also described the match as being “about putting the invaders in their place.”
This incident follows earlier actions by Argentina‘s players. After their dramatic 3-2 last-16 win over Egypt, the players sang chants referencing the Falklands, alongside football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. These repeated references highlight the deep-seated connection many in Argentina feel towards the issue.
Despite the political expressions from some quarters, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni had previously stated his intention to separate football from politics. Before the semi-final, Scaloni remarked that he was “not going to mix” the two. He emphasised that the match was a football game and expressed respect for the historical events, calling the period a “very sad period in our history.” Scaloni concluded by stating that while they remember those involved, it is a football match and the two should not be confused.
Argentina is now set to face Spain at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, aiming to become only the third nation to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
