After collecting their silver medals, Lionel Messi and his teammates reportedly did not remain on the podium to applaud Spain as they prepared to lift the trophy. Instead, the Argentina players walked to the opposite side of the pitch. This action drew attention as Spain had previously formed a guard of honour and applauded Argentina when they received their runners-up medals.
During the individual awards ceremony, when Rodri stepped forward to receive the Golden Ball award for being named the tournament’s best player, sections of Argentina supporters in the stadium chanted Lionel Messi’s name. Broadcaster Adrian Durham, speaking on talkSPORT, strongly condemned Argentina’s conduct, stating they showed “no class whatsoever” and were a “total disgrace.”
Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart also criticised Argentina’s behaviour, calling it “disgusting.” He noted that Lionel Messi was the only player who showed class by shaking hands with the Spanish players. Other pundits, including Gary Neville and Alan Shearer, also expressed their disapproval of Argentina’s actions, particularly the physical altercations and the lack of sportsmanship during the trophy presentation.

Spain’s victory marked their second FIFA World Cup title and extended their unbeaten run to a European-record 38 matches. The final remained goalless throughout normal time, with Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez making several saves against Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres, and Pau Cubarsi. Argentina’s Enzo Fernandez was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card, making him only the sixth player to be dismissed in a FIFA World Cup final.

Messi was seen crying as he watched the Argentina fans after the defeat. He later quickly left the pitch after Spain lifted the trophy.
Argentina had previously faced criticism for their aggressive behaviour during their 2-1 semi-final win over England. Cristian Romero, an Argentina centre-back, reportedly snubbed a handshake from Donald Trump during the medal presentation. Trump was handing out medals to both teams, and Romero shook hands with FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum, but not with the US president.
