Jude Bellingham has publicly supported his England teammates following manager Thomas Tuchel’s critical assessment of their performance against Norway in the World Cup 2026 quarter-finals. Tuchel had described his side as “lucky” after their 2-1 extra-time victory, a comment that led to a heated exchange with a broadcaster.
When asked about Tuchel’s remarks, Bellingham stated, “whatever… My thoughts are with the players, who put in a great shift out there.” This response highlighted his focus on the team’s effort in securing their place in the semi-finals against Argentina.
Controversy Surrounds England’s Equaliser
The match, held in Miami, saw England advance after a tense encounter. Andreas Schjelderup initially put Norway ahead in the 36th minute with a goal that appeared to be a mishit cross. Bellingham then equalised just before half-time, converting a pass from Anthony Gordon.
However, Bellingham’s equaliser was not without controversy. Norway’s coach, Stale Solbakken, claimed that goalkeeper Orjan Nyland’s clearance kick appeared to hit a camera cable above the pitch, causing the ball to drop unnaturally. This incident, according to Solbakken, led to a misunderstanding among his players, creating the opportunity for England’s goal.
FIFA, however, released a statement during the match, asserting there was “no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball.” The statement further noted that the sensor in the ‘Connected Ball’ showed no peak in its ‘heartbeat’ when in the air, suggesting no contact occurred. Tuchel also stated he had not noticed the incident but trusted the Connected Ball technology.
Despite his concerns, Solbakken emphasised that he did not want the incident to overshadow Norway’s overall performance in the World Cup. He expressed his hope that discussions would focus on other aspects of his team’s campaign rather than the controversial cable incident.
Bellingham’s Decisive Role and Team Effort
Bellingham secured England’s victory in extra time, scoring in the 93rd minute by capitalising on a rebound from Nyland’s save. This goal marked his second of the match and ensured England’s progression to their second semi-final in the past three World Cups.
Reflecting on his performance, Bellingham expressed pride in his teammates. He acknowledged his own impact but stressed the collective effort, stating, “my God, the effort of those lads in there. I’m so proud of how they keep battling, regardless of what situations we find ourselves in.”
The match also saw Norway’s Erling Haaland substituted at half-time during extra time, potentially due to a slight injury. Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson, who sustained a freak arm injury after England’s win over Mexico, has not ruled out a return for the semi-finals.
Other notable performances for England included Bukayo Saka, who was described as a “nightmare for the Norway defenders,” and Reece James, who was dependable after coming on. Declan Rice was substituted at half-time, with fans hoping it was a precautionary measure.
The quarter-final also highlighted the impact of new rules, as Switzerland manager Murat Yakin criticised the new ‘mistaken identity’ rule after Breel Embolo was sent off in their 3-1 defeat to Argentina. Yakin argued that the rule, which led to Embolo receiving a second yellow card after an initial caution for Leandro Paredes was overturned, was “unnecessary and extremely hurtful.”
