Former England Test captain Ben Stokes is expected to balance his commitments with Durham and opportunities in franchise cricket globally, according to Durham coach Ryan Campbell. Stokes recently made his final appearance for England against New Zealand at Trent Bridge earlier this month.
Following his retirement from international cricket, Stokes demonstrated his continued value to Durham by scoring an unbeaten century in a One-Day Cup match against Derbyshire. This performance helped secure a victory for his county side.
Return to County Cricket and Future Plans
Stokes’ century against Derbyshire marked his first 50-over match for Durham in 12 years. In that game, he scored an unbeaten 108 runs, guiding Durham to a five-wicket win. He also bowled nine economical overs, finishing with figures of 0/38.
During the chase of 257 runs, Durham faced difficulties at 98/3 before Stokes anchored the innings. His knock of 108 runs off 123 balls included 10 fours and three sixes. Despite experiencing cramp for a significant portion of his innings, Stokes remained at the crease until the end, ensuring Durham reached 257/5 in 49.1 overs, winning with five balls to spare. Kasey Aldridge remained unbeaten on 23, while Will Rhodes contributed 45 and Colin Ackermann added 28. Earlier, Derbyshire had posted 256/9 in 50 overs, with Martin Andersson top-scoring with 112 and Brooke Guest making 48. Luke Robinson was Durham‘s most effective bowler, taking 3/44.
While Stokes intends to participate in most of Durham‘s remaining matches this season, he has also expressed interest in playing overseas. Campbell indicated that Durham would plan a course for Stokes that includes playing in the One-Day Cup and as many of the six four-day matches as possible.
Campbell mentioned that they would monitor Stokes’ workload, but noted his resilience. He expects Stokes to play in every possible game for Durham this season and potentially into the next year. This situation will lead to the first instance of Durham needing to work out a contract for Stokes, a new development for the club.
Franchise Cricket Prospects
Campbell also suggested that Stokes is likely to explore opportunities in various franchise cricket leagues. Stokes has previously participated in the IPL and the Big Bash, though he has not played in any overseas franchise cricket since 2023. The coach believes that combining these franchise opportunities with his commitments to Durham will be an exciting prospect for Stokes.
Stokes’ return to county cricket has been met with enthusiasm. He reflected on his early days with Durham, recalling how playing alongside or against England players like Paul Collingwood was a significant experience. He hopes that current young players at Durham will have a similar experience playing with him.
Before his recent century, Stokes had announced his retirement from international cricket following England‘s third Test against New Zealand. He shared an emotional message on social media platform X, thanking his supporters and teammates. He described his 15-year journey as having everything from highs to lows, both on and off the field, and stated that the decision to retire was his alone.
Stokes concluded his international career having played 122 Tests, captaining in 44 of them. He scored over 7,000 runs and took more than 200 wickets in Tests. Additionally, he represented England in 114 One-Day Internationals and 43 Twenty20 Internationals.
For the immediate future, Durham will have Stokes available as they prepare for their next One-Day Cup match against Sussex on Friday.
