Brendon McCullum has issued an apology to England fans following his removal as the team’s Test coach. He acknowledged that the team’s performance did not meet expectations during his tenure. While he will continue in his role as England‘s white-ball coach, his position as Test coach, which he had held since 2022, concluded.
Speaking at Edgbaston, McCullum confirmed that the decision to remove him came from the England and Wales Cricket Board. He stated, “Yeah, I got a tap on the shoulder.” He expressed disappointment but also respect for the board’s decision, recognising that in a results-driven business, the team’s outcomes were not sufficient.
McCullum accepts responsibility
McCullum openly accepted responsibility for the team’s cultural and tactical aspects, as well as the results. He highlighted the failure to secure victories in major series against India and Australia as the biggest disappointment of his time as coach. “For that I guess I can only say sorry,” he remarked, taking full accountability for the team’s performance.
Under McCullum’s leadership, alongside captain Ben Stokes, England adopted an aggressive style of Test cricket, often referred to as ‘Bazball’. This approach initially saw England win 10 of McCullum’s first 11 Tests and garnered praise for its fearless nature.
However, the team’s performance declined in the later stages of his coaching period. England experienced seven losses in their last nine Tests, including a home series defeat to New Zealand. During this period, England also failed to win their significant Test rivalries, drawing home series against India and Australia 2-2, and losing both contests when playing away from home.
The ‘Bazball’ approach under scrutiny
The ‘Bazball’ philosophy aimed to transform England‘s Test cricket, promoting an attacking and fearless style of play. This approach led to immediate success, with England winning all three Tests against New Zealand in June 2022 and later securing a victory against India at Birmingham. The team also achieved a whitewash against Pakistan and a win in New Zealand, contributing to a 55 per cent win rate and elevating England to second in the ICC rankings.
Despite early successes, the 2023 Ashes series at home revealed vulnerabilities in the ‘Bazball’ strategy. Australia‘s pace attack challenged England, who lost the first two Tests. Although England fought back to draw the series 2-2, Australia retained the Urn, indicating that the aggressive approach could be vulnerable against elite pace bowling.
Further challenges emerged during the away series against India in early 2024, where England lost 1-4 after winning the first Test. The team also faced difficulties in Pakistan in October, losing matches when confronted with spin-friendly pitches. The pink ball Test in Australia, where England lost the series 1-4, marked a significant setback.
Overall, England recorded 27 wins in 49 Tests under McCullum. Against India and Australia combined, England won four Tests and lost eleven. The series records against these teams included a 1-4 loss in India, a 2-2 draw at home against India, and a 1-4 loss away in the Ashes.
McCullum reflected on his departure, noting a sense of fitting timing, especially after Ben Stokes‘ retirement from the Test format. He mentioned receiving messages from Stokes, suggesting a shared conclusion to their involvement in the Test setup.
