Chelsea has confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old forward has agreed to a contract at Stamford Bridge that extends until 2033. Rogers is set to join Xabi Alonso‘s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season.
Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, stating his long-standing admiration for Chelsea as a club. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for the project under the new manager and the direction the club is heading. His arrival follows a period where he established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League.
During his tenure at Aston Villa, Rogers contributed to 40 goals through goals and assists across 85 Premier League appearances. His performance helped the Midlands club achieve a top-four finish and secure the UEFA Europa League trophy last season. Since his senior England debut in November 2024, Rogers has earned 22 caps and represented his country at this summer’s FIFA World Cup.
The transfer process
The transfer of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea has been a process spanning over two years, culminating in a club-record fee for a British player. Chelsea agreed to a fee of £117 million with Aston Villa. This deal was reportedly finalised swiftly, with formal negotiations between Chelsea, Villa, and Rogers’ representatives beginning on a Thursday.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso reportedly contacted Rogers directly on a Friday to discuss his plans for the player, with personal terms agreed upon the same day. Key figures within Chelsea, including owners and sporting directors Paul Winstanley, Laurence Stewart, Joe Shields, and Sam Jewell, were involved in the deal. Additionally, club captain Reece James and close friend Cole Palmer communicated with Rogers, signaling Chelsea’s strong interest.
Rogers’ versatility was a significant factor in Chelsea’s pursuit. He is capable of playing on the left, right, as a ‘No 10’, ‘false nine’, and deeper in midfield. His physical attributes and attitude were also noted as positives. Chelsea had identified Rogers as their top target for a versatile attacker who could immediately contribute to the team.
Alonso’s call to Rogers was particularly influential, with the manager outlining his vision for Rogers’ role since his appointment in May. Rogers reportedly felt a strong connection with Alonso and was impressed by the manager’s reputation and passionate pursuit.
Competition and Villa’s stance
Chelsea’s interest in Rogers dates back to before he joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in January 2024. Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, was involved in negotiations at that time. Middlesbrough had included a 20 per cent sell-on clause in that initial deal.
Interest from Chelsea resurfaced in January 2025 and again last summer, but Villa had been reluctant to sell. Manager Unai Emery considered Rogers a vital player for the club. Despite this, Villa accepted that player sales were necessary to sustain progress and comply with financial regulations. The club had anticipated Rogers’ departure once England exited the World Cup.
Arsenal was considered a primary competitor for Rogers’ signature. England teammates Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, along with Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, reportedly attempted to persuade Rogers to join their club. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta also spoke directly with Rogers, who initially felt Arsenal was his preferred choice. However, Chelsea’s approach and the promise of positional flexibility ultimately swayed Rogers.
Aston Villa co-owner and chairman Nassef Sawiris had the final say on Rogers’ transfer. Villa had set a high benchmark for the transfer fee, influenced by other significant signings in the market. The club’s quick agreement with Chelsea on the fee reflected their acceptance of the valuation. Villa had already secured a direct replacement, signing Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, and plans to use the funds from Rogers’ sale to target a fast winger, with players like Crysencio Summerville and Ibrahim Mbaye reportedly on their list.
Chelsea’s rapid and efficient approach to the transfer, particularly after England’s World Cup exit, was crucial. The club contacted Rogers’ representatives and quickly agreed to personal terms. Alonso’s direct involvement and his detailed plans for Rogers’ role at Chelsea were significant in convincing the player to choose Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea believes they have secured a highly talented and versatile player, beating out London rivals Arsenal for one of English football’s promising talents. Rogers’ contract at Chelsea is set to run until 2033.
