Fleming’s Departure from Chennai Super Kings

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have announced their separation from long-serving head coach Stephen Fleming. This decision concludes a significant period of association with the former New Zealand captain. The franchise is currently reviewing its cricket operations, with discussions underway regarding potential changes to the coaching staff.

Rupa Gurunath, daughter of N Srinivasan and full-time Director of Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited (CSKCL), has been involved in overseeing key decisions. Gurunath stated that Fleming had been the “heartbeat” of their coaching unit for almost the entire journey of the franchise, helping to shape its identity and pursuit of excellence for nearly two decades. She expressed gratitude for his commitment, passion, and leadership, noting that he will remain an integral part of the team’s legacy.

Fleming also commented on his departure, describing his 18 years with the team as a privilege and expressing pride in their achievements. He mentioned the unforgettable victories and difficult moments shared, affirming that CSK will always be close to his heart.

A Look Back at Fleming’s Tenure

Fleming’s involvement with CSK began in the inaugural IPL season as a player in 2008, before he took over as head coach in 2009. His tenure as head coach saw the team achieve considerable success, including winning 5 IPL trophies and 2 Champions League Twenty20 tournaments. Under his guidance, CSK reached 11 finals, with 10 in the IPL and one in the Champions League, securing six titles.

During the franchise’s two-year suspension in 2016 and 2017, Fleming coached Rising Pune Supergiant, leading the team to the 2017 final. The franchise also made it to the playoffs a record 12 times during his coaching period.

However, the team’s performance in recent seasons has been less successful. After narrowly missing the playoffs in 2024, CSK finished 10th and eighth in the subsequent two seasons. The franchise also faced challenges in other leagues where Fleming was in charge. For instance, Joburg Super Kings reached the SA20 playoffs in each of the last three seasons but did not make a final, and Texas Super Kings did not reach the title clash in Major League Cricket (MLC). In the ongoing season, they finished last with three wins and seven defeats from 10 matches.

As the Chennai Super Kings move forward, former India cricketer Hemang Badani has emerged as a contender to join the coaching set-up. Badani previously served as head coach for Delhi Capitals (DC) for the last two seasons. Under Badani, DC finished fifth and sixth in the 2025 and 2026 seasons, respectively.

The coming weeks are expected to be significant for CSK, with potential tough decisions on trades, the coaching staff, and even the captaincy. The franchise aims to restore its past success as it plans for the future.
