The Big Bash League (BBL) is set to commence its 2026-27 season in India, with Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium selected to host the opening match in December. This historic fixture will mark the first time a BBL game is played outside Australia. The announcement was made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi during Albanese’s visit to Australia.
Cricket Australia later confirmed that the Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers will compete in this inaugural international BBL match. The game is scheduled to officially kick off the BBL 16 season on December 12. The Melbourne Renegades will be the designated home side for this significant event at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen sporting ties between Australia and India. The match in Chennai will also be a central feature of a week-long Australian cultural festival planned across India during December. This event will make the domestic Australian T20 competition the first foreign cricket league to be played in India.
Deepening Sports and Bilateral Cooperation
The announcement of the BBL match in India coincides with the unveiling of the Roadmap on Sport Cooperation. These agreements covered civil nuclear energy, maritime security, critical minerals, and enhanced defence ties. The two nations also agreed to firm up the proposed Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and a bilateral investment protection framework to boost trade and investment.
Under key defence developments, India and Australia adopted the India-Australia Joint Declaration on Defence and Security Cooperation (JDDSC) and the India-Australia Maritime Security Collaboration Roadmap (MSCR). These were among 18 major outcomes announced after the Third India-Australia Annual Summit. The summit concluded with developments across defence, maritime security, energy, cyber and critical technologies, education, mining, research, and cultural cooperation, marking an expansion of the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The Big Bash League, established by Cricket Australia in 2011, is a professional Twenty20 cricket league featuring eight city-based franchises and is held annually between December and February. The upcoming match in Chennai on December 12 will be a significant milestone for the league.
