Undav’s impactful substitute appearances
Germany substitute Deniz Undav has been ranked as the top attacking player in the FIFA World Cup 2026 after the group stage, according to FIFA‘s official performance rankings. Undav’s efficiency from the bench allowed him to surpass Lionel Messi, who currently leads the Golden Boot race.
Undav achieved this top ranking despite not starting any matches for Germany. He made three substitute appearances, accumulating a total of 86 minutes on the field. During these brief periods, he scored three goals and provided two assists.
His contributions included a goal and two assists in Germany‘s 7-1 victory over Curaçao, playing for just 26 minutes. He also scored two goals, including the winning goal in the 94th minute, during Germany‘s 2-1 win against Ivory Coast.
These performances earned Undav an attacking rating of 8.36, narrowly exceeding Messi‘s rating of 8.34. FIFA‘s rankings, developed with Aramco under Arsène Wenger‘s guidance, evaluate player performance using advanced match data, focusing on efficiency and overall impact.
Messi’s continued record-breaking run
Despite being second in the attacking rankings, Lionel Messi has had a notable tournament. The Argentina captain has scored six goals in three group-stage matches, increasing his total World Cup goals to 19 and positioning him as the leading scorer for the knockout rounds.
Messi also made history by becoming the first player to score against 13 different countries in the FIFA World Cup during Argentina‘s match against Jordan. Additionally, he is the first footballer to score in seven consecutive World Cup matches, adding to his list of tournament records.
His attacking rating of 8.34 would typically place him at the top of FIFA‘s rankings, but Undav’s exceptional efficiency from limited playing time led to Messi‘s second-place finish.
Other top performers in the rankings
France captain Kylian Mbappé is ranked third in FIFA‘s attacking rankings with a score of 8.13. Brazil‘s Vinícius Júnior is fourth with 7.92, having scored four goals in the group stage, including one in each of Brazil‘s three matches against Morocco, Haiti, and Scotland.
Ousmane Dembélé of France is sixth, following a hat-trick against Norway completed within 32 minutes in the first half, making him the first player since Oleg Salenko in 1994 to achieve this feat. Norway striker Erling Haaland is also among the leading performers, having scored four goals in his debut World Cup campaign.
The FIFA Power Rankings system, launched for the FIFA World Cup 2026, provides objective, data-driven insights into player performance. Outfield players receive scores out of 10 across attacking, creativity, and defending categories, while goalkeepers are assessed for their goalkeeping and possession contributions.
In other position-specific metrics, France‘s Michael Olise leads the creativity rankings with a score of 8.03. Canada‘s Luc De Fougerolles is the highest-rated defender with 7.38, and Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill and South Africa‘s Ronwen Williams are the top two goalkeepers. As the Round of 32 commences, the competition for individual honours remains open.
