FIFA Power Rankings update for World Cup 2026
The FIFA World Cup 2026 has seen an update to its individual player ranking system, the FIFA Power Rankings, following the second day of the group stage. This system uses data to evaluate player performance across offensive, creative, and defensive categories. Players must have played at least 20 minutes during the tournament to be included in these rankings.
Initially, Lionel Messi held the top spot overall. However, the Argentinian player has since been surpassed, despite scoring two goals against Austria. The new overall leader is Germany’s Deniz Undav, who achieved the highest offensive rating of 8.94 after scoring two goals against Ivory Coast.
Following Deniz Undav in the overall rankings are Lionel Messi with a score of 8.36 and Kylian Mbappé, who scored two goals against Iraq and holds a score of 8.08.
Top performers in key categories
In the attacking category, several players have demonstrated strong performances. Nicolas Pépé earned an attacking score of 8.5 for his two goals. Anthony Elanga, who scored Sweden’s equaliser, completed five take-ons and six ball progressions, resulting in an attacking score of 9.1. Sebastian Berhalter also registered a notable attacking score of 9.01 after scoring for his team.
Other attacking players highlighted include Leroy Sané with an attacking score of 8.2, Hazem Mastouri, and Cristian Volpato, who had an attacking score of 5.90.
For creativity, France’s Michael Olise currently leads the category with a score of 8.14, attributed to his two assists against Iraq. He is ahead of Paraguay’s Julio Enciso, who has a creativity score of 7.87, and Morocco’s Brahim Diaz with 7.53.
Additional creative players include Tahith Chong, who completed eight ball progressions and four progressive passes for a creativity score of 8.0. Hannibal Mejbri achieved a creativity score of 8.9 with an assist and eight ball progressions. Ritsu Dōan, with one assist, also earned a creativity score of 8.0. Arda Güler completed 10 progressive passes and four ball progressions for a creativity score of 8.33. John Yeboah, with four progressive passes and two midfield unit line breaks, recorded a creativity score of 7.7. Julio Enciso, with two attempts at goal, 12 ball progressions, and seven take-ons, earned a creativity score of 5.74.
On the defensive front, Canada’s Derek Cornelius maintains his leading position with a score of 7.48. He is followed by Belgium’s Brandon Mechele with 7.33 and Cape Verde’s Pico Lopes with 7.16.
Other strong defensive performances include Pedro Vite for Ecuador, who completed three interceptions and won three duels for a defending score of 7.2. Guéla Doué recorded the highest defending score of 8.2 in a match, with eight possession regains and two duels won. Virgil van Dijk had a defending score of 6.8, with nine possession regains, six interceptions, and six possession contests won. Ao Tanaka of Japan, with five blocks and 11 forced turnover involvements, earned a defending score of 7.1. Lucas Herrington for Australia had a defending score of 7.97, winning five clearances and completing 15 possession regains. Joe Scally for USA made one clearance, four interceptions, and six possession regains, earning a defending score of 6.58.

The FIFA Power Rankings system was established by Arsène Wenger and provides objective, data-driven insights into player performance. Outfield players receive a score between 0-10 in three categories: attacking, creativity, and defending. Goalkeepers are scored in two categories: in possession and defending the goal. A ‘Power Ranking Classification’ is released after each match round, detailing the top 100 players in each category, with each player receiving a score for each match and their overall tournament performance.
