United States President Donald Trump has criticised England’s tactics following their World Cup semi-final defeat to Argentina, specifically questioning the decision to deploy Harry Kane in a defensive role during the second half. The comments were made during a reception where President Trump appeared alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
England manager Thomas Tuchel’s substitutions in the second half have drawn criticism from various pundits and supporters after the 2-1 loss. Argentina scored two goals to secure their place in the final against Spain. Reports indicated that several key players were disappointed with how England was instructed to conclude the match after taking the lead through Anthony Gordon.
Tuchel had shifted to a back five and introduced several defensive-minded players in the latter stages of the game, a period during which Lionel Messi inspired Argentina’s comeback. President Trump remarked on the tactical change, stating, “You have a great player in England who I’ve played golf with. And he is Harry [Kane] who has been fantastic.”
He continued, “I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence.” President Trump acknowledged his limited knowledge of football coaching but described the decision as “a little unusual.”
Tuchel later addressed President Trump’s remarks in a news conference, dismissing the criticism. Following the loss to Argentina, Tuchel maintained that he had no regrets about his tactical decisions in the second half, suggesting that England had played some of their best football in the tournament.
Messi’s Impact and Kane’s Role
President Trump also praised Lionel Messi’s decisive performance against England. He highlighted Messi’s ability to create a crucial opportunity, which led to Argentina’s winning goal. “I watched that pass that Messi made,” President Trump said, noting its precision. He described how Messi, despite being closely marked, moved to a position that allowed for a perfect delivery, leading to the goal that ended England’s hopes of reaching the final.
The US president emphasised that the capacity to consistently produce decisive moments distinguishes top players. He mentioned that such players, including Cristiano Ronaldo, seem to possess “something extra.”
Regarding Kane, President Trump reiterated his surprise at the striker’s defensive positioning. He observed that after England had taken the lead, their “best player” was moved into a defensive role. Tuchel had altered England’s formation as Argentina intensified their attacks, eventually having six recognised defenders on the pitch. Consequently, Kane spent a significant portion of the final half-hour defending near his own penalty area.
Tuchel defended Kane’s deeper positioning, explaining that the entire England team was forced into a low defensive block. However, he conceded that his side had become too passive and struggled to maintain possession during the last 30 minutes of the match.
FIFA World Cup and Controversies
President Trump also spoke about his interaction with FIFA regarding USA striker Folarin Balogun’s one-match suspension. Balogun, who is 25, was initially set to miss his side’s last-16 match against Belgium after receiving a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. FIFA subsequently made the decision to suspend the automatic one-match ban for 12 months, a move that generated considerable discussion.
President Trump recounted asking Infantino to review the suspension. He stated, “I said ‘Gianni, I’d like to make a recommendation. Let the guy in the game!’ No, I didn’t say that. I said I’d like to wage a complaint.” He added that the outcome, with Belgium winning and the US team having all its players, resulted in “no controversy.”
President Trump thanked Infantino and described the World Cup, hosted in the US, Mexico, and Canada, as “the most successful sporting event, maybe in the history of the world.” Infantino echoed this sentiment, stating that the World Cup had “exceeded expectations” and was “the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed.”
The decision to suspend Balogun’s ban has been a subject of controversy. Infantino had previously denied that President Trump’s lobbying influenced the decision, asserting the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary committee. However, President Trump’s recent comments have reinforced suspicions that political interference may have affected the integrity of the competition.
The close association between President Trump and Infantino has led to questions regarding FIFA’s commitment to political neutrality. Despite these concerns, both individuals pointed to record ticket sales and high television viewership in the US as indicators of success. The expanded tournament has offered significant drama, and many visitors were impressed by the stadiums and security arrangements.
Concerns have been raised about the financial costs for fans, prompting questions about FIFA’s revenue generation. Additionally, discussions about a further expansion to 64 teams have caused dismay among traditionalists, leading to fears about the commercialisation of the event. Visa-related issues at the beginning of the tournament also undermined claims of an inclusive World Cup. England is scheduled to play France in the third-place match, while Argentina will face Spain in the final on Sunday.
