Ecuador raises concerns over pre-match disturbances
Ecuador has lodged a formal complaint with World Cup organisers regarding disturbances outside their team hotel in Mexico City. The complaint comes ahead of their last-32 match against co-hosts Mexico. Local reports indicate that approximately 1,000 Mexico supporters gathered for a noisy ‘serenade’ on Monday. The fans reportedly used noisemakers, pans, and buckets while singing the Mexican folk song “Cielito Lindo” before police intervened.
The Ecuadorian football federation issued a statement, asserting that such conduct deviates from the principles of fair play, equality, and unity that a football World Cup should embody. The federation also stated that Ecuador would “always respond on the pitch.”
Match officials and team form
The upcoming match between Mexico and Ecuador will be officiated by Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic. He will be supported by Assistant Referee 1 Tomaz Klancnik, Assistant Referee 2 Andraz Kovacic, Fourth Official Mustapha Ghorbal, and Reserve Assistant Referee Mokrane Gourari. This will be Vincic’s third assignment at this edition of the tournament, having previously overseen two group stage fixtures. His career includes officiating the UEFA Champions League final in 2024 and the UEFA Europa League final in 2022.
Mexico enters the knockout stage with a perfect record, having won all three of their group games, scoring six goals and conceding none. They have a strong history at Mexico City Stadium, winning all three of their World Cup games played there. Ecuador secured their spot in the knockout stages after a significant 2-1 victory over Germany, qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams. Their group stage included a loss to the Ivory Coast and a draw with Curacao.
The two nations have previously met in a FIFA World Cup group stage in 2002, where Mexico emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline. The winner of this last-32 fixture will potentially face England, provided England also win their match against DR Congo on Wednesday.
Mexico’s historical challenge and team outlook
In Mexico, the phrase ya merito, meaning “almost there,” is often associated with the national men’s football team, reflecting their history of reaching the knockout rounds but often falling short. Since 1994, Mexico has consistently reached the knockout stages but has been eliminated in the first round, with the exception of Qatar where they did not advance from the groups. Their last appearance in the “fifth game” was a quarter-final in 1986, the last time the World Cup was held on home soil.
Despite this historical pattern, Mexico has displayed strong collective strength, with their coach Javier Aguirre emphasizing a meticulous, game-by-game approach. Aguirre, who coached the national team in 2002 and 2010 when they were eliminated in the round of 16, believes this current generation of players is unburdened by past complexes. The team’s current winning streak is their best performance in a World Cup group stage ever. Ecuador’s squad includes notable players such as defender Willian Pacho, Piero Hincapié, and Moisés Caicedo.
The match is scheduled to be played on Wednesday at Mexico City Stadium.
