England and Argentina prepare for semi-final clash

England and Argentina are set to meet in a World Cup 2026 semi-final match in Atlanta, Georgia. The game, scheduled for Wednesday, will take place at the Atlanta Stadium. This encounter marks a significant moment as England aims to reach its first World Cup final since 1966, while Argentina, the defending champions, seek to advance to consecutive finals.

The rivalry between the two nations extends beyond the football pitch, influenced by historical political disputes. The 1982 Falklands War, a 74-day conflict, resulted in numerous casualties. The British overseas territory, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas, remains a point of contention regarding sovereignty.

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has stated his intention to keep football separate from politics, acknowledging the sad period in history but emphasizing that the match is solely about the sport. He noted, “It was a very sad period in our history, and there isn’t much we can do about it, that’s the reality.” Increased security measures are anticipated in Atlanta due to these historical tensions.

Despite the manager’s stance, a chant referencing the islands and football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi was filmed being sung by Argentina players after their 3-2 victory over Egypt in the last 16. Maradona famously led Argentina to a win against England in the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals.

Key players and team form

Lionel Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, is expected to face England for the first time in his career. The forward has been a pivotal player for Argentina, scoring eight goals in the tournament, a joint-high alongside France striker Kylian Mbappe.

Argentina has faced challenges in their path to the semi-finals. Their 3-2 win against Egypt in the last 16 was also a hard-fought contest. Despite these demanding matches, Scaloni remains unconcerned about his team’s form, stating, “I don’t mind how we got here.”

For England, the focus will be on stopping Messi. The team’s current squad, featuring players like Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham, is aiming to make history by winning a second major trophy, and their first on foreign soil. Kane and Bellingham have each scored six goals during the World Cup. Scaloni acknowledged both players as “two great players, among the best in the world.”

England topped Group L. They overcame the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the round of 32 and defeated co-hosts Mexico 3-2 in the last 16. In the quarter-finals, they secured a victory over Norway.

Match details and predictions

The match will be officiated by Ismail Elfath from the United States, with Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins as assistant referees. Maurizio Mariani from Italy will serve as the fourth official.

In terms of team news, England midfielder Declan Rice is a doubt due to illness, and Jordan Henderson is out with a wrist injury. No injuries have been reported in the Argentina camp.

A predicted lineup for England includes Pickford; Konsa, Stones, Guehi, O’Reilly; Rice, Anderson; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane. Argentina‘s predicted lineup features Martinez; Molina, Romero, Lisandro, Tagliafico; Paredes; De Paul, Fernandez, Mac Allister; Messi, Alvarez.

Historically, England leads the head-to-head record with six wins compared to Argentina‘s three, with five matches ending in a draw. The winner of this semi-final will advance to face either France or Spain in Sunday’s final at New York New Jersey Stadium.
