England’s World Cup Hopes Dashed
England were eliminated from the World Cup semi-finals after a 2-1 defeat to Argentina, despite holding a 1-0 lead late in the match. The team’s defensive approach after scoring has drawn significant criticism, with many questioning manager Thomas Tuchel’s tactical decisions.
The match, held at Atlanta Stadium, saw England take the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon. However, Argentina equalised in the 85th minute with a strike from Enzo Fernandez, assisted by Lionel Messi. Lautaro Martinez then secured Argentina’s victory with a 92nd-minute header, also assisted by Messi, sending them to the final against Spain.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney commented on the team’s performance, stating, “We have crumbled.” He attributed this to the manager’s decisions, describing the approach as “too passive.” Rooney emphasised that such tactics would not succeed against a team of Argentina’s calibre, suggesting England failed their biggest test.
Tactical Decisions Under Scrutiny
After taking the lead, England significantly reduced their possession, holding just 12% from the time they went ahead until conceding the second goal. This shift to a more defensive posture, intended to protect their lead, ultimately backfired. Tuchel introduced defenders Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn, and Nico O’Reilly after England scored, while forwards Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney were only brought on deep into stoppage time.
Chris Sutton, a Premier League winner, described Tuchel’s strategy as a “coaching catastrophe.” He argued that defending for 30 minutes against Argentina’s quality was unsustainable. Sutton questioned Tuchel’s future leadership, highlighting the manager’s negative approach during the crucial phase of the game.
England captain Harry Kane reflected on the match, noting, “When we went 1-0 up we seemed to try and hold on, which at this level is not enough.” He expressed his disappointment, acknowledging the team’s hard work to reach that stage. Kane also mentioned that after their goal, Argentina exerted continuous pressure, which England struggled to match.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez also observed the change in momentum, stating that England opted to defend after scoring. He suggested that sometimes a team needs to continue attacking even when winning, and that England’s decision to introduce extra defenders altered their game plan.
Tuchel Defends His Choices
Despite the widespread criticism, Thomas Tuchel defended his decisions in the post-match news conference. He stated, “No, I believe it’s just the nature of the game. As soon as you lose you get criticised, it’s just what it is.” Tuchel maintained that he had no regrets and that the team gave their utmost, coming very close to victory.
He described the match as one of their better performances, possibly their best under the circumstances, and praised the team’s mentality and strength. Tuchel highlighted the challenges overcome throughout the tournament, including playing against strong teams, extensive travel, high altitude, and adverse conditions.
Former England defender Micah Richards, while expressing admiration for Tuchel’s bravery, conceded that the manager “got it wrong” on the biggest stage and must accept that. The tactical choices, particularly the defensive substitutions, are expected to be a subject of debate for days following England’s failure to reach the final.
Tuchel’s changes included bringing on Konsa for Gordon in the 72nd minute, shifting to a back five, and then introducing Burn and O’Reilly ten minutes later. These substitutions were made in an attempt to protect the lead, but they ultimately could not contain Messi’s influence on Argentina’s late goals.
Argentina continued to press after England’s goal, with Messi orchestrating attacks that led to their comeback. Martinez noted that England appeared to tire, having pressed for 60 minutes before sitting back, which allowed Argentina to gain composure and stretch the play.
This defeat marks only the second time this century that a team leading in a World Cup semi-final failed to reach the final, with the other instance also involving England in 2018 against Croatia.
