Post-Match Confrontation Under Investigation
Following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, a confrontation involving players and staff from both teams occurred on the pitch. Fifa has since initiated an investigation into these incidents, appointing a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess the events that transpired at MetLife Stadium.
Among those reportedly involved were Argentina’s Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada, along with assistant coach Roberto Ayala. The altercation unfolded as Spain began celebrating their win, leading to a scuffle with Argentina players and backroom staff.
During the fracas, Paredes was seen pushing Spain’s Eric Garcia. Unused substitute Gavi attempted to intervene but was forced to the ground by Almada, with Paredes then pushing Gavi by placing his hand on the Spanish midfielder’s face. Ayala also appeared to be involved, reportedly holding Garcia and striking Spain midfielder Dani Olmo.
Despite the visible altercations, Gavi has expressed that he does not believe Paredes should face suspension. Speaking to El Partidazo de COPE, Gavi acknowledged that the incident might not present a positive image for younger audiences but suggested it reflects a more physical and aggressive aspect of football.
He further commented that the most logical action would have been for Paredes to be sent off during the match itself, implying that any further disciplinary action might be excessive. Gavi concluded by stating, “In the end, I think it’s all football and it has to be that way.”
Disciplinary Actions and Previous Incidents
Fifa’s disciplinary committee has several options available as it investigates the post-match events. Any player or coach found to be involved could face a suspension, and the Argentine Football Association (AFA) may also incur a fine. The disciplinary and ethics prosecutor will examine the offences in detail, considering both aggravating and mitigating circumstances, and has the authority to impose global bans.
Initially, Fifa’s commentator information system incorrectly reported that Paredes had been sent off by referee Slavko Vincic for pushing Garcia. However, this red card was promptly removed from the system, and Fifa later confirmed that no disciplinary action was taken during the match itself. Argentina had one player dismissed during the final, with Enzo Fernandez receiving a second yellow card in second-half added time.
This is not the first time the AFA has faced scrutiny regarding the conduct of its players. Fifa had already initiated potential disciplinary action against Argentina after players displayed a banner supporting their country’s claims to the Falkland Islands following their 2-1 semi-final win against England. The banner read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to “The Falklands are Argentine.”
Previous incidents include charges related to “offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play” and “misconduct of players and officials” after the 2022 World Cup final. More recently, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez received a two-game ban in 2024 for ‘offensive behaviour’ during World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia.
Ayala’s Statement and Broader Implications
Roberto Ayala, Argentina’s assistant coach, stated he would apologise to Spain’s Dani Olmo for his involvement in the incident. He described his action as “more of a push than a punch” and explained to Capital Radio in Valencia that his intention was to de-escalate the situation, not to contribute to it. “My intention was simply to go and separate them, nothing more,” Ayala said.
The investigation by Fifa’s disciplinary committee will consider whether the actions of the players and staff violated “the basic rules of decent conduct” or brought “the sport of football and/or Fifa into disrepute,” as outlined in Article 13 of the disciplinary code. There is currently no set timeline for the prosecutor to conclude the investigation into Argentina’s conduct.
The outcome could range from fines for the AFA to suspensions for individual players or coaches involved. The disciplinary process aims to address the behaviour observed at the conclusion of the World Cup final.
