The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have officially announced the qualification pathway for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games at Los Angeles 2028. This marks the sport’s first appearance on the Olympic stage since 1900. Both the men’s and women’s competitions will feature six teams each, playing in a Twenty20 format at a purpose-built cricket venue in Pomona, located in Los Angeles County.
For the women’s event, four teams have already secured their places. Australia, Great Britain (represented by England), India, and South Africa have qualified based on their performances in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. These teams emerged as the highest-placed eligible finishers from Oceania, Europe, Asia, and Africa, respectively, fulfilling a one-per-continent rule.
Men’s qualification roadmap detailed
The qualification process for the men’s competition heavily relies on the official ICC Men’s T20I Rankings, with a definitive cut-off date set for December 31, 2026. Five automatic berths are available, with the final spot determined by a global qualifier. The United States, as the host nation, is eligible for automatic entry, provided they meet a specific condition.
The USA Men’s team must be ranked among the top 15 ICC T20I teams at any point between June 30, 2026, and December 31, 2026. If this condition is met, their spot in Los Angeles is secured. Currently, the USA is ranked 13th, meaning they could theoretically seal their qualification early in the window.
Four additional spots will be allocated to the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania as of December 31, 2026, ensuring continental representation. India, currently the top-ranked men’s T20I side, is well-positioned for automatic qualification from Asia. England holds the top European spot, Australia leads in Oceania, and South Africa is the frontrunner for Africa.
Final spots and West Indies’ unique situation
The sixth and final spot in both the men’s and women’s competitions will be decided through the ICC Olympics Qualifier 2027. This tournament will feature eight teams in each event, comprising the next seven highest-ranked teams globally who did not secure automatic continental qualification, along with one team from a dedicated Caribbean qualifier if applicable.
Teams like Pakistan and New Zealand, currently ranked sixth and fourth respectively, could find themselves competing in this qualifier if they remain behind their continental peers by the end of 2026. The West Indies faces a unique challenge as it represents multiple Caribbean nations and is not recognized as an IOC National Olympic Committee (NOC).
If the West Indies men’s or women’s teams are among the eight highest-ranked non-qualified sides by December 31, 2026, a separate Caribbean qualifier will be held. The winning island territory from this tournament will then earn the right to represent the region at the global ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.
For the women’s event, the USA Women also retain the host privilege, requiring a top 15 ranking position to seal the fifth spot. If they do not meet this requirement, the position will default to the highest-ranked non-qualified side on March 1, 2027. The sixth and final women’s spot will also be determined at the eight-team global qualifier tournament in 2027.
Tournament format at LA28
Once the six teams for each competition are confirmed, the Olympic tournament will follow a distinct format. The six nations will be divided into two groups of three. Following a single round-robin group phase, teams will play two additional cross-pool fixtures against opponents who finished in different positions in the opposite group.
The top two teams in the overall multi-phase standings will advance directly to the gold medal match, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete in the bronze medal play-off. The qualification rules were officially unveiled on June 29, 2026.
