India A begins unofficial Test series
The India A cricket team has commenced its first unofficial Test match against Sri Lanka A in Galle. Dhruv Jurel, captain of India A, won the toss and elected to bat first. This match marks the beginning of a two-match red-ball series, providing a significant platform for several emerging Indian cricketers to demonstrate their abilities in red-ball cricket.
The series is seen as a crucial opportunity for players to impress selectors and potentially secure spots in the senior national squad. The matches are expected to be closely watched, particularly given the upcoming international tours for the Indian national team.
Key players under the spotlight
Among the players drawing attention is fast bowler Aquib Nabi Dar. His performance in the Ranji Trophy, where he played a key role in Jammu & Kashmir’s triumph and finished the season with 60 wickets, garnered widespread praise. Despite his strong domestic showing, his omission from the squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan raised questions among fans and former cricketers.
The tour of Sri Lanka offers Nabi another chance to make a strong case for higher honours. A compelling display in challenging overseas conditions could make it difficult for selectors to overlook him for future Test plans. With India scheduled to tour New Zealand later this year, Nabi’s ability to generate movement and extract assistance from seaming conditions could be advantageous.
Another pacer in the India A squad is left-arm bowler Gurnoor Brar, who recently made an impression during his ODI debut against Afghanistan. While the pitches in Sri Lanka are generally anticipated to favour spinners more than fast bowlers, Brar will be aiming to make an impact and maintain his contention for a place in the senior setup.
Batter Sai Sudharsan also has a crucial red-ball outing ahead. The series is expected to be important for him to spend time at the crease and regain momentum in preparation for India’s upcoming Test assignments. Sudharsan remains in contention for a spot in the Test XI and will be looking to strengthen his credentials with substantial scores.
Devdutt Padikkal, who was not part of the Afghanistan Test, is also included in the squad and is competing for a spot in the batting order, specifically the number three position with Sudharsan.
Squad composition and leadership
Dhruv Jurel, an India wicketkeeper-batter, is leading the side in both multi-day matches. The batting lineup for the first unofficial Test includes Sai Sudharsan, Ayush Pandey, Devdutt Padikkal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhruv Jurel (captain & wicketkeeper), and Shaik Rasheed. The bowling attack features fast bowlers Auqib Nabi Dar, Anshul Kamboj, and Yash Thakur, alongside spinners Harsh Dubey and Saransh Jain.
Anshul Kamboj, who experienced a difficult Test debut in England last year, will be hoping for a strong performance to revive his red-ball prospects. The Sri Lanka A team, captained by Sahan Arachchige, includes experienced wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella in their playing XI. Other players in the Sri Lanka A lineup are Pawantha Weerasinghe, Nuwanidu Fernando, Ashen Bandara, Ravindu Fernando, Anjala Bandara, Kavindu Pathiratne, Dulaj Samuditha, Chamika Gunasekara, and Dilum Sudeera.
The India A squad for the multi-day matches in Sri Lanka also features N Jagadeesan (wicketkeeper), Aman Mokhade, and Zeeshan Ansari, with Devdutt Padikkal serving as vice-captain. The first unofficial Test match began on Thursday.
