Coach addresses communication rumours
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has refuted claims of a rift between star batter Virat Kohli and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Kotak stated that the two communicate frequently, often speaking multiple times a day, and dismissed suggestions that a mediator is needed between them. Speculation regarding their relationship gained traction on social media after observations during India‘s training sessions for the ODI series against England, where Kohli and Gambhir were not seen interacting directly.
Reports had indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was even considering a mediator to help resolve alleged differences. However, Kotak clarified that there is no communication breakdown, asserting that Kohli and Gambhir speak to each other regularly. He also addressed a specific instance during a practice session before the first ODI at Edgbaston, where Kohli was seen batting in the nets while Gambhir watched without direct interaction. Kotak was observed conversing with Kohli during this time, which further fueled online discussion.
Kotak laughed off the idea that he was acting as a ‘bridge’ between the two prominent figures, stating that they do not require one. He emphasised that any discussions he had with Kohli were purely related to batting technique and strategy, and not about mediating personal differences. The coach highlighted that he generally refrains from offering unsolicited advice to experienced players like Kohli unless specifically requested.
Coaching philosophy for star players
Sitanshu Kotak elaborated on his coaching approach, particularly concerning established players such as Virat Kohli. He explained that he prefers not to interfere with a batter’s technique unless there is a significant issue or if the player seeks guidance. This philosophy aligns with remarks made by his predecessor, Abhishek Nayar, regarding not disturbing a legend’s batting unless they ask for inputs.
During their conversation at the net session before the second ODI in Cardiff, Kohli had approached Kotak to discuss specific aspects of his batting. These discussions primarily revolved around his footwork and other pre-session insights. Kotak clarified that such interactions are a normal part of a coach-player relationship and are not indicative of any underlying issues between Kohli and Gambhir.
The batting coach reiterated that the rumours about a communication breakdown are unfounded. He stressed that he does not know the origin of these speculations but affirmed that they are not based on reality. Kotak‘s statements aim to put an end to the ongoing discussions about a potential rift within the India squad.
Team performance and player form
Beyond the speculation surrounding Kohli and Gambhir, Sitanshu Kotak also addressed the performance of other key players, including captain Rohit Sharma. Sharma has faced challenges with his form in the ongoing ODI series against England. His difficulties were evident in the second ODI in Cardiff, where England secured a four-wicket victory to level the three-match series 1-1.
In that match, Rohit Sharma scored 26 runs off 47 balls, despite India reaching 61/1 in the Powerplay. He was dismissed while attempting a sweep shot against Will Jacks. His performance in ODIs this year has included only one half-century across eight matches, with an average of 30.12. This has led to questions about his place in the squad, particularly with the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind.
However, Kotak expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma, stating that a player of his calibre does not feel pressure easily. He acknowledged that Sharma had not scored significantly in the two recent games but maintained that this does not diminish his overall ability or importance to the team. The batting coach indicated that there is no pressure on the veteran opener, despite the upcoming series decider at Lord’s on July 19.
