Sooryavanshi’s Omission Sparks Debate
The decision to not include Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in India’s recent T20I series against Ireland has led to considerable discussion among former players and pundits. Despite India’s series defeat, the young batter remained on the bench, prompting questions about the team management’s selection strategy. This debate now precedes India’s upcoming tour of England, which is set to commence on July 1.
Many view the omission of Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old prodigy, as a missed opportunity to introduce new talent in a lower-pressure environment. Historically, such series against lower-ranked teams have been used to integrate young players into international cricket. However, after India lost the first T20I against Ireland, the team management reportedly opted for continuity, aiming to back their T20 World Cup-winning core.
This approach has been criticised for its perceived inconsistency, especially given that Suryakumar Yadav, the World Cup-winning captain, was not included in the squad. Former India batter Sunil Gavaskar emphasised that form should have been the primary criterion for selection, not hierarchy. He suggested that Sooryavanshi, who had been in strong form, should have played in both matches against Ireland.
Calls for Inclusion in England Series
Sunil Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the playing XI for the upcoming five-match T20I series against England. He stated that it is now imperative for Sooryavanshi to make his India debut in England, especially following the team’s performance in Ireland. Gavaskar highlighted that players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan struggled with the bat during the Ireland series.
Gavaskar suggested that while the opening partnership of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma has performed well, a middle-order batter who has not scored runs could be replaced to accommodate Sooryavanshi. He proposed that Sooryavanshi could bat at number three, with Ishan Kishan at number four and Shreyas Iyer at number five. Gavaskar believes that playing Sooryavanshi from the first match on July 1 could potentially surprise England.
Sooryavanshi’s credentials include winning the Orange Cap and the MVP award in IPL 2026. He also demonstrated strong form during a stint with India A in Sri Lanka, where he scored 94 runs off 29 balls in a final in Dambulla, including an 11-ball fifty. These performances suggest that his claim for a spot in the team is based on merit rather than mere hype.
Differing Perspectives on Selection
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif echoed Gavaskar’s sentiments, criticising the perceived inconsistency in the selection logic. He questioned the rationale of prioritising a World Cup-winning core while simultaneously removing other successful captains like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in favour of younger players. Kaif argued that if the team is indeed looking towards youth, then Sooryavanshi, with his recent form, should have been a clear choice.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary also expressed his disappointment, suggesting that the coaching staff might be adhering to preconceived notions rather than acknowledging current form. He pointed out that while some players were selected based on their performance in the T20 World Cup, which occurred before the IPL, Sooryavanshi’s recent strong performances were overlooked.
However, former India spinner R Ashwin offered a different perspective. He argued that there is currently no immediate place for Sooryavanshi in the current playing XI. Ashwin explained that players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma do not participate in Test or ODI cricket, making the T20 format crucial for their continued relevance within the team structure. He suggested that if Sooryavanshi were to play, it might be more appropriate for a tour like Zimbabwe, where incumbent openers might not be present. Ashwin concluded that while Sooryavanshi deserves a place on merit, it should not come at the expense of the current openers.
The tension surrounding Sooryavanshi’s selection is now a public issue for India to address. The series against Ireland presented an ideal, low-stakes opportunity for his debut, which was not utilised. The upcoming series against England, starting on July 1, will be a more challenging environment, making the decision regarding Sooryavanshi’s inclusion even more critical.
