India’s commanding performance in London
The Indian Men’s Hockey Team delivered a powerful offensive display, defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 7-1 in the reverse fixture of their FIH Pro League London leg. The match took place at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre on Friday, where India secured all three points with a comprehensive victory.
Despite an early setback, India responded with seven goals from multiple players. Sukhjeet Singh, Harmanpreet Singh, Hardik Singh, Jugraj Singh, Abhishek, Raj Kumar Pal, and Dilpreet Singh all contributed to the scoreline. Midfielder Hardik Singh was recognised as the ‘Player of the Match’ for his influential performance and control in the midfield throughout the game.
Match progression and key moments
The match began with high intensity from both teams. India earned an early penalty corner within the first 90 seconds, following a quick baseline run by Mandeep Singh. However, Pakistan’s counter-attacks led to them winning a penalty corner in the 13th minute. Following an unsuccessful video referral by India, Pakistan captain Abu Bakar Mahmood converted the penalty corner with a drag-flick, giving his team a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
India took firm control in the second quarter, utilising precise long passes to stretch the Pakistan defence. A significant moment occurred in the 18th minute when a deflected pass from Ali Ghazanfar accidentally struck teammate Ahmad Nadeem, forcing him off the field. India capitalised on this momentum, earning a penalty corner a minute later. Skipper Harmanpreet fired a powerful drag-flick, which Sukhjeet expertly deflected into the net in the 20th minute, levelling the score at 1-1.
The Indian team continued their offensive pressure. In the 26th minute, India secured another penalty corner, and this time Harmanpreet converted it directly into the top left corner, giving India a 2-1 lead as they headed into halftime. This marked a turning point, as India had successfully overturned the early deficit.
Second-half dominance and goal surge
The ‘Men in Blue’ significantly increased their dominance in the second half. In the 34th minute, India earned consecutive penalty corners, with the second resulting in a penalty stroke. Hardik stepped up and calmly converted the stroke, extending India’s lead to 3-1. Pakistan attempted to respond quickly, winning two penalty corners, but the Indian defence successfully blocked both attempts, maintaining their advantage.
Following the block of Pakistan’s second penalty corner, India launched a rapid counter-attack. The ball found Dilpreet, who combined effectively with Sukhjeet before setting up Jugraj, who smashed it home in the 35th minute, further increasing India’s lead to 4-1. India’s frontline remained relentless, with Sukhjeet creating another opening in the 41st minute. He passed to Abhishek, who scored on the run, making the score 5-1.
Late in the third quarter, India earned four consecutive penalty corners. On the fourth attempt, Raj Kumar Pal reacted quickly to guide the rebound from Harmanpreet’s drag-flick into the open goal in the 44th minute, pushing the lead to 6-1. This period showcased India’s sustained pressure and ability to convert opportunities.
India maintained strong defensive discipline in the final quarter while continuing to seek further scoring chances. In the 54th minute, Dilpreet completed a well-executed move by scoring India’s seventh goal of the match, solidifying their commanding lead. Pakistan earned back-to-back penalty corners in the final minutes of the game, but veteran midfielder Manpreet Singh stood firm, blocking both attempts and sealing India’s comprehensive 7-1 victory. The match concluded with India securing a significant win over their traditional rivals.
