India’s ODI World Cup Vision
India captain Shubman Gill has outlined the team’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Speaking before the first ODI against England at Edgbaston, Gill emphasised the importance of the 50-over format, stating that it remains the most prestigious World Cup.
Gill, who took on captaincy duties in the ODI format late last year, highlighted that every upcoming series will be crucial for determining combinations and adapting to conditions similar to those expected in South Africa. He stressed that the mindset is to find the best combination for the team, making the current series a significant one.
The captain revealed that he has already engaged in discussions with Virat Kohli regarding the ideal squad composition for the 2027 World Cup. These conversations at the nets focused on identifying players who might not currently be in the squad but could contribute significantly in the future, including bowlers, all-rounders, and spinners.
Format and Team Composition Discussions
Gill expressed his belief that the 50-over format should not be reduced to 40 overs, asserting its integral role in his childhood and its status as the pinnacle of ODI cricket. He suggested that instead of altering the format, introducing multi-nation tournaments like triangular or quadrangular series more frequently could enhance the appeal of ODI cricket for both players and fans. He recalled the enjoyment of watching such series in the past, where teams played against different opponents at various venues.
The road to the 2027 World Cup is not without its challenges for India, particularly concerning injuries to all-rounders. Players like Hardik Pandya are not currently with the team, and Nitish K Reddy and Harshit Rana have faced injury setbacks. Additionally, the form of Kuldeep Yadav and the future roles of experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have been subjects of discussion.
Gill affirmed the continued importance of Kohli and Sharma, describing them as the backbone of India‘s batting lineup for the past decade. He underscored their valuable experience and skill, which have been consistently demonstrated across various conditions, tournaments, and matches. The team’s top five, including Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, appears settled, but the fitness of all-rounders remains a concern.

Upcoming Series and Player Management
The return of Jasprit Bumrah to the ODI squad after being rested to manage his workload following IPL 2026 has been welcomed. Gill expressed hope that Bumrah has had sufficient overs leading up to the ODI series and that the series will be successful for him, contributing to a series victory for India.
India is set to play 12 ODIs until next April, including away series against England and New Zealand, and home series against Sri Lanka and the West Indies. These matches are crucial for finalising the main 15-player squad and backup options. The captain acknowledged that while some players, such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, are awaiting opportunities, the focus will be on rotating players to provide experience while maintaining stability and achieving positive results.
Gill also extended congratulations to the Indian women’s team for their historic 270-run victory over England in the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s. He described it as a proud moment, acknowledging the special significance of playing and winning at that stadium. The current three-match ODI series against England marks the beginning of India‘s journey to regain momentum in the format, following recent white-ball defeats, including a 2-0 loss in Ireland and a 4-0 defeat in the T20I series against England.
The next 14 months will be instrumental for Gill to shape the Indian men’s team as its leader.
