Kishan’s Ascent to Top Spot
Ishan Kishan, the India wicketkeeper-batter, has ascended to the top position in the ICC Men’s T20I Player Rankings. This marks the first time Kishan has held the premier spot, taking over from his teammate Abhishek Sharma. The updated rankings were released following India‘s recent two-match T20I series against Ireland in Belfast, which India won 2-0.
Kishan’s rise is attributed to his consistent performance, particularly during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup earlier this year. The left-handed batter accumulated 317 runs in the tournament with a strike rate of almost 200. His notable contributions included an Aramco Player of the Match performance against Pakistan in Colombo.
Abhishek Sharma had maintained the top ranking for nearly 12 months. Kishan now joins an exclusive group of Indian male players who have held the top position for batters in T20I cricket, a list that includes Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav.
The competition at the top remains tight, with only seven rating points separating Kishan and Sharma in the T20I batting rankings. This close margin highlights the strong performances from both Indian players in the format.
Other Ranking Movements
The recent series also saw other players making strides in the rankings. From Ireland, Lorcan Tucker moved up four places to equal 77th, and Ross Adair climbed six slots to 84th in the T20I batting category, following their efforts with the bat in Belfast.
In the T20I bowlers’ list, seamer Matthew Humphreys of Ireland achieved a new career-high rating, moving up one place to 25th after securing four wickets across the series. India‘s Shivam Dube also saw an improvement in the T20I all-rounders’ rankings, advancing three rungs to seventh. Irelandn players Gareth Delany and Harry Tector also made gains in this category, with Delany moving up four slots to 24th and Tector eight spots to 38th.
Changes in Test Rankings
Beyond the T20I format, significant changes were also observed in the latest Test rankings this week. These updates followed the completion of three Test matches globally, leading to notable shifts at the top of both the batting and bowling categories.
Australia‘s left-handed batter Travis Head has claimed the position as the number one Test batter for the first time in his career. This change occurred as Harry Brook and Joe Root, who dropped two spots to third, did not perform as expected during the Nottingham Test against New Zealand.
In the Test bowling rankings, Jasprit Bumrah of India now holds the top spot exclusively, with New Zealand pacer Matt Henry moving down to second. The Black Caps emerged victorious at Trent Bridge, enhancing their prospects in the ICC World Test Championship.
Several New Zealand players made significant advancements in the updated list for Test batters. These include Rachin Ravindra, who moved up two spots to seventh, Daryl Mitchell, who climbed five places to 11th, Devon Conway, who rose 14 rungs to equal 15th, and Tom Latham, who advanced 12 slots to equal 31st.
New Zealand pacer Nathan Smith also made gains on the latest Test rankings, moving up eight rungs to 38th. England captain Ben Stokes improved two places to finish his international career in third place on the list for Test all-rounders, following his mid-match retirement.
Furthermore, a pair of West Indies fast bowlers, Shamar Joseph and Kemar Roach, saw improvements in their rankings after their Test triumph over Sri Lanka. Joseph moved up nine slots to equal 14th, and Roach advanced four places to 17th on the list for Test bowlers, following their performances in Antigua.
