Ivory Coast have advanced to the World Cup knockout stages for the first time in their history, following a 2-0 victory over Curaçao. The decisive goals came from Nicolas Pépé, who scored twice in the Group E match held in Philadelphia.
The win ensures Ivory Coast finished second in their group with six points, marking their first instance of winning two matches at a World Cup tournament. This achievement allows them to progress to the round of 32, a stage they had not reached in their three previous World Cup appearances.
Early lead and second-half sealing
Ivory Coast established an early lead, with Pépé scoring just seven minutes into the game. The opportunity arose when Curaçao’s defenders failed to clear their lines, allowing Yan Diomande to dispossess them and set up Pépé for a tap-in into the bottom right corner. This early goal helped settle any nerves for the Ivorian side, who only needed a point to secure their progression.
Despite the early setback, Curaçao maintained their spirit, creating several chances throughout the match. Players like Jurien Gaari, Tahith Chong, and Leandro Bacuna attempted shots, though their combined expected goals (xG) indicated a limited definitive threat. Curaçao’s best opportunity in the first half came just before half-time when Juninho Bacuna broke through but fired wide at the near post.
The second goal for Ivory Coast arrived in the 65th minute. Ibrahim Sangare provided a pass to Pépé, who then slotted a left-footed strike into the top corner past Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room. This goal solidified Ivory Coast’s lead and secured their historic progression, despite Curaçao’s efforts to find a goal, including a strong save by Fofana from a long-range effort by Noslin late in the game.
Curaçao’s World Cup journey concludes
For Curaçao, their debut World Cup campaign concluded with this match. They finished bottom of Group E with one point from three matches. Their single point was earned from a draw against Ecuador in a previous match. Despite their elimination, Curaçao leaves the tournament with their reputation enhanced, particularly given their status as the smallest nation by population to play in a men’s World Cup.
Their performances against larger football nations, including a goalless draw against Ecuador where goalkeeper Eloy Room made a reported 15 saves, demonstrated their resilience. While they experienced a 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game, they managed to score and were level for a period. The sadness among the Curaçao team after the final whistle in Philadelphia highlighted their belief in their ability to continue surprising observers.
A new chapter for Ivory Coast
The achievement by the current Ivory Coast squad marks a significant milestone, one that previous generations, including those led by Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure, were unable to reach. This qualification to the knockout stages comes 20 years after their first World Cup appearance, drawing a line under past disappointments and near misses.
In previous World Cups, Ivory Coast faced tough group draws. In 2006, they were grouped with Argentina and the Netherlands, failing to advance despite a victory over Serbia and Montenegro. The 2010 tournament saw them draw with Portugal but lose to Brazil, and despite beating North Korea, they again missed out on progression. The 2014 World Cup was particularly heartbreaking, as they were favourites to advance but conceded a 93rd-minute goal in a 2-1 defeat to Greece in their final group game.
The team’s manager, Emerse Fae, expressed his satisfaction with the result, highlighting the team’s growth and strong spirit. He encouraged fans to celebrate this historic qualification and continue to send positive vibes for their journey in the tournament. Fae also noted the healthy competition within the squad, which he believes helps each player perform at their best. This current squad, while perhaps lacking the big stars of the past, has demonstrated great spirit and mental strength, notably after their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations victory where they lifted the trophy after a managerial change during the group stage.
Ivory Coast will now prepare to face the runners-up from Group I, either France or Norway, in the round of 32. This match is scheduled to take place on 30 June in Arlington, Texas.
