Croatia secures second place in Group L
Croatia secured a 2-1 victory over Ghana in their recent encounter, which saw them finish second in World Cup Group L. Petar Sucic opened the scoring for Croatia with a long-range strike in the 31st minute, finding the bottom left corner of the net. This early goal provided Croatia with a deserved lead, as they had approached the match needing only a draw to advance to the last 32. The team’s strategy, as described by coach Zlatko Dalic, involved opening up the pitch to challenge Ghana’s defence.
The Croatian side demonstrated a strong offensive presence, with Ivan Perisic contributing from left-back and the team proving effective from distance. Earlier in the match, Nikola Vlasic hit the post in the 13th minute, foreshadowing the team’s attacking intent before Sucic’s breakthrough goal, which came after Mateo Kovacic provided the ball in the centre of the field.
Ghana’s equaliser and subsequent defeat
Ghana showed significant improvement in the second half, with their efforts culminating in an equaliser in the 73rd minute. Derrick Luckassen, making his international debut, scored after an inswinging free-kick delivered by Ernest Nuamah. Luckassen’s goal was initially ruled out for offside, but after a VAR review, referee Drew Fischer reversed the decision, confirming the goal.
The joy for Ghana was short-lived, however. In the 83rd minute, Luka Modric delivered a corner kick that found Nikola Vlasic, who headed the ball into the net. This late goal secured the 2-1 win for Croatia and cemented their second-place finish in Group L. Vlasic’s decisive header came 10 minutes after Luckassen’s equaliser, with a portion of that time dedicated to the VAR review.
Ghana’s coach, Carlos Queiroz, had made a double substitution at halftime, which appeared to spark the team’s most attacking period in the tournament. Luckassen was on the field due to Queiroz’s decision to rest players who had accumulated yellow cards. Despite the loss, Ghana had already secured qualification for the knockout rounds, marking their first advancement since 2010.
Looking ahead to the knockout stages
With their second-place finish, Croatia is set to face the second-placed team from Group K in the last 32. This match is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Toronto. Potential opponents for Croatia include Portugal or Colombia, depending on the final standings of Group K.
Ghana, having finished third in Group L, will proceed to play the winners of Group K. Their upcoming match is scheduled for Friday in Kansas City. Like Croatia, Ghana could face either Portugal or Colombia, depending on which team tops Group K.
During the match, Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo briefly limped off due to an apparent ankle injury in the late stages but was able to return and complete the game. Luka Modric, who provided the assist for Vlasic’s winning goal, became the oldest player in history to record an assist at the World Cup.
