Midfield Targets Join Rivals
Manchester United have reportedly missed out on two key midfield targets this summer. On June 25, Manchester City secured a £116m deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson, who was a primary target for United. Following this, Tottenham agreed to pay West Ham £85m for Mateus Fernandes, another player United had shown interest in.
The club’s pursuit of these players was influenced by the significant costs involved in bringing them to Old Trafford. This situation mirrors the summer of 2022, when United spent an extended period pursuing Frenkie de Jong, ultimately without success.
As July begins, several players have departed Old Trafford. Casemiro and Jadon Sancho, both out of contract, have left the club. However, key players like Marcus Rashford and Andre Onana remain with United. The only confirmed exit involving a transfer fee so far is Rasmus Hojlund, whose £38m move was finalised in May after Napoli’s qualification for the upcoming Champions League season.
New Transfer Pursuits and Strategy
United has reportedly agreed to a £35m deal with Serie A club Atalanta for Ederson. However, the midfielder’s medical examination is on hold due to his late call-up to the Brazil squad for the 2026 World Cup. The medical is expected to proceed once Carlo Ancelotti’s side concludes their participation in the tournament; they are scheduled to play Norway in the last 16 on July 5.
The club aims to acquire at least one, and potentially two, additional midfield options. Recent reports have linked United with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott. However, Arsenal has already been informed that the 22-year-old is not available for transfer, and his current club is reportedly working to secure him on a long-term contract. Other midfielders mentioned as potential targets include Tyler Adams from Bournemouth and Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
Felix Nmecha, a former Manchester City academy player, is another name being considered. United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, who previously headed City’s academy, is familiar with Nmecha. The situation of Real Madrid’s France international Aurelien Tchouameni is also being monitored, though the current indication is that he will remain at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Lessons from Past Transfer Windows
United’s recruitment strategy is being defended by club sources, who reference the relative success of the previous summer’s transfers as evidence of its effectiveness. The club’s approach to transfers has been compared to the summer of 2022, when the protracted pursuit of Frenkie de Jong ultimately did not result in a signing.
Despite the initial setback with De Jong, United later acquired Casemiro from Real Madrid for a fee of up to £70m, a move that proved successful. Casemiro recently departed Old Trafford with tributes from staff, teammates, and supporters. This suggests that missing out on initial targets does not necessarily lead to a negative outcome for the club.
The decision to not match Tottenham’s bid for Fernandes was influenced by the substantial fee for a young player who is still developing. United’s current data-led recruitment approach means they have a comprehensive list of potential midfield options. The club now faces the challenge of securing a midfielder who aligns with their desired profile and is available at an appropriate price.
