Jos Buttler was a central figure in the Super Giants’ performance, scoring an impressive 90 runs from 50 balls. His innings included seven fours and five sixes, guiding his team to a total of 187-5. This score represents the second-highest total recorded in The Hundred at Old Trafford.
Buttler’s form has been notable, following his highest T20 score of 131 against India earlier in the month. His half-century in this match was achieved in 31 balls. He combined powerful hitting with delicate shots around the ground, dictating the pace of the innings. This knock also marked his 103rd fifty in T20s, adding to his nine tons in the format.
The 35-year-old batter continued to accelerate after reaching his half-century. His exceptional innings concluded with three balls remaining in the Super Giants’ turn at bat. During his time at the crease, Buttler formed key partnerships, including a 42-run stand with Aiden Markram for the second wicket and another 45 runs with Heinrich Klaasen for the third wicket. He also contributed to a 68-run partnership with Tom Moores, who remained unbeaten with 39 runs from 17 deliveries.
Phoenix’s Struggle and Super Giants’ Bowling
The Birmingham Phoenix faced a challenging chase, ultimately being bowled out for 100 runs in 97 balls. Their reply began shakily, with Josh Tongue taking two wickets in consecutive balls, dismissing Will Smeed and Rehan Ahmed. Liam Dawson also made a significant impact, claiming 3-15, including the wicket of opener Joe Clarke.
The Phoenix’s early collapse saw them at 43-4 after Laurie Evans followed Clarke back to the pavilion. Despite captain Donovan Ferreira top-scoring with 23 runs, the team was unable to recover from the initial setbacks. This defeat marks their first loss of the campaign.
The match in Manchester experienced a delay of 30 minutes for the men’s game, and the women’s fixture was called off due to rain. However, once play commenced, the spectators were treated to Buttler’s performance. His 90 runs also pushed him past the 1,000-run mark in The Hundred, achieving 1,021 runs from 27 matches at an average of 40.84. He has now hit his ninth fifty in the tournament and has accumulated 44 sixes in The Hundred.

Looking ahead, Southern Brave will play against MI London in Southampton for a double-header on Monday. In the women’s competition, Southern Brave will aim to maintain their top position in the table, having secured two wins so far. MI London, still seeking their first victory, will face them at 15:00 BST.
Following the women’s match, the men’s teams of Southern Brave and MI London will compete at 18:30 BST. The Brave’s men’s team is currently looking for their first win of the season.
