The upcoming World Cup quarter-final in Miami will see England face Norway, setting up a direct confrontation between club teammates Declan Rice and Martin Ødegaard. Both players, integral to their club’s recent achievements, will put their camaraderie aside as they represent their respective nations in a decisive match.
Rice and Ødegaard have played together on 117 occasions, but their 118th encounter, in the intense Miami heat, is anticipated to be particularly memorable. The two players, born less than a month apart, did not compete against each other at youth levels, with their previous face-offs limited to training sessions.
Club Leaders Turn National Rivals
Both Rice and Ødegaard are considered leaders for their club and country, albeit with different styles. Ødegaard, who became Norway’s captain in 2021 at the age of 22, was later given the same role at his club in 2022. This decision was seen as a move towards a more focused approach for the club.
Rice, who serves as vice-captain for England and is part of his club’s leadership group, has become a significant figure for both his club and national team. His commitment was evident in a recent match in Mexico City, where he played his 66th game of the season despite dealing with hamstring and lower-back pain.
Ødegaard has previously spoken highly of Rice, describing him as a player who “always gives absolutely everything for the team, always fighting for every single ball, bringing his energy to the pitch.” He added that Rice “can do so many things on the pitch,” highlighting his versatility in defence and attack.
The importance of Ødegaard to his club’s strategies has been scrutinised due to a series of injuries that affected his title-winning season, as well as the arrival of another player. Despite this, there are no plans for his club to sell him. His national team coach, Ståle Solbakken, has praised Ødegaard’s leadership, particularly during challenging times for Norway.
Ødegaard’s performance in Norway’s opening match against Iraq drew criticism, but he has since shown improved form, particularly in their recent victory over Brazil in the last 16. Leading Norway in their first World Cup appearance since 1998 has been a long-term goal for Ødegaard.
Solbakken noted that Ødegaard might have a more flexible role within the national team compared to his club responsibilities, which he believes the player enjoys and deserves due to his experience. Rice may be tasked with neutralising Ødegaard’s influence in the upcoming match, a role he is capable of handling given his strength in game management.
Quarter-Final Fixtures Announced
The World Cup quarter-final schedule includes several key matchups. France will play Morocco on Thursday, 9 July, in Boston. Spain will face Belgium on Friday, 10 July, in Los Angeles. The highly anticipated match between Norway and England is scheduled for Saturday, 11 July, in Miami. The quarter-final stage concludes with Argentina taking on Switzerland on Sunday, 12 July, in Kansas.
Mikel Merino, who scored a late winner for Spain against Portugal, expressed his joy at being part of the tournament, stating that being there was “unthinkable” just a few months prior. His coach, Luis de la Fuente, described Merino as “world-class” and a reliable player who “never disappoints.”
As Rice and Ødegaard prepare to face each other, their strong relationship, forged through shared success at their club, will be temporarily set aside. Ødegaard has previously stated, “It’s such a pleasure to share the pitch with him.” The outcome of their direct competition on Saturday, 11 July, will determine which team advances to the semi-finals.
