New Zealand secures series victory
New Zealand has secured a Test series victory against England on English soil for the fourth time, wrapping up a 160-run win in the third Test at Trent Bridge. This result brings the series to a close with New Zealand winning 2-1. The final day saw England dismissed for 212 soon after lunch, having resumed on 103 for four while chasing 373 for victory.
This marks England’s first home series defeat in a series of three or more Tests since 2012. The team has experienced a challenging period, losing seven of their last nine Tests. Ben Stokes’ international farewell
The third Test at Trent Bridge also marked the end of Ben Stokes’ international career. Following the match, Stokes expressed his support for Harry Brook as his potential successor for the captaincy. He stated that it would be a “natural progression” for his deputy. Stokes affirmed his full backing for Brook, highlighting that there is a reason Brook was appointed vice-captain. He also noted that he was not involved in some of the decisions made regarding the vice-captaincy amidst recent discussions.
Stokes drew a parallel to his own experience as vice-captain under Joe Root, suggesting that if a captain is unavailable, the vice-captain naturally steps into the role. He emphasized that a player is asked to be vice-captain because they are believed to possess the necessary skills and ability to lead the team, and therefore, there is no reason why Brook should not be considered for the captaincy.
Addressing speculation about a potential return to face Australia next summer, Stokes firmly dismissed such suggestions, stating, “I’m done.” He mentioned receiving questions about whether he would watch next year’s Ashes from his sofa, and while acknowledging the significance of the event, he indicated he would likely watch it from a hospitality box.
