Former India batter Aakash Chopra has stated that Rohit Sharma remains an “irreplaceable” asset for India’s One Day International (ODI) squad, provided he maintains his fitness, availability, and scoring form leading up to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027. Chopra’s remarks underscore the veteran opener’s continued significance in India’s long-term cricketing strategy.
Speculation surrounding Rohit’s international future had emerged during India’s tour of England. Ahead of the third ODI at Lord’s, there were discussions that the series decider might mark his final international appearance, especially after his retirement from T20Is and Tests. However, Rohit responded to these doubts with a substantial 138-run innings during India’s chase of 388 runs, effectively quashing concerns about his form.
Chopra, speaking on The Great Indian Cricket Show on Doordarshan, emphasized that India’s ODI plans should continue to center around the experienced opener. He highlighted Rohit’s “sheer pedigree and legacy,” suggesting that there is no immediate need to consider other options in ODI cricket. Chopra also pointed out that the upcoming World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, will demand experienced players who have a proven track record of performing under pressure in challenging conditions.
Opening combination and future outlook
Chopra also expressed his support for India’s current opening partnership, which features Rohit Sharma alongside ODI captain Shubman Gill. He sees no compelling reason to alter a combination that is currently functioning effectively. Chopra cautioned against making changes simply for the sake of it, even when an abundance of alternatives might present themselves. He advised maintaining focus on the World Cup and retaining Rohit as long as he continues to perform.
In the England ODI series, Rohit accumulated 175 runs across three matches, achieving an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 98.31. His standout performance was the 138-run innings from 110 balls in the third ODI, which included 17 fours and five sixes. Although India lost that match by 27 runs and the series 2-1, Rohit’s century stand with Virat Kohli, who scored 74 runs off 60 balls with four fours and three sixes, was noted as a positive aspect.
Overall, Rohit has amassed 11,895 runs in 288 ODIs and 280 innings, maintaining an average of 48.95 and a strike rate of 93.04. His career includes 34 centuries, 62 fifties, and a highest score of 264. He ranks as the seventh-highest run-scorer in ODI history and is India’s third-highest, following Virat Kohli (14,941 runs) and Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs).

In the nine ODIs played this year, Rohit has scored 379 runs at an average of 42.11. This tally includes one century and one fifty, with his highest score being 138 runs. These statistics highlight his consistent contributions to the team’s batting lineup.
