The FIFA World Cup match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle was preceded by discussions regarding team scheduling and a designated Pride Match. Egypt‘s head coach, Hossam Hassan, emphasised the importance of equal treatment for all teams participating in the tournament. He expressed respect for all teams that have earned their place at the World Cup, highlighting FIFA’s principles of respect and fair play.
Hassan offered support for the Iranian team, who had faced criticism regarding their travel restrictions and scheduling from the tournament co-hosts, the United States. He stated that the Iranian team is one he respects greatly. Iran‘s manager, Amir Ghalenoei, reiterated that US travel policies had impacted his squad’s fitness and preparation. He noted that while they were able to arrive in Seattle two days before the match against Egypt, this right had been denied in their two previous games.
Both coaches conveyed mutual respect for each other’s teams during separate news conferences. Ghalenoei expressed happiness that two teams from ancient civilisations were playing together and were proud of their countries. He also mentioned that his team would not focus solely on stopping Mohamed Salah, acknowledging that Egypt has many effective players across the field.
Match designated as a Pride event
The match in Seattle was designated as a Pride Match, celebrating diversity and the LGBTQ+ community. This designation occurred despite complaints from the Iranian and Egyptian football federations, given that homosexuality is illegal in both countries. Officials from the Seattle host committee stated that Pride Weekend was planned before the draw that paired the two countries, suggesting that understanding should be sought over withdrawal in such situations.
Fans outside the stadium described a positive atmosphere surrounding the event. The match proceeded as planned on Friday, aiming to promote inclusivity.
On-field action and group standings
During the match, Egypt maintained control of possession for periods, while Iran defended in a mid-block formation. Early in the second half, Iran showed intent with Ghoddos delivering a cross that Ezatolahi did not gamble for at the far post. Later, Ezatolahi had a shot that went over the bar.
Egypt‘s Trezeguet and Marmoush linked up well, and Salah kept an attack alive, leading to a shot by Trezeguet that was saved by Beiranvand. Salah was later seen receiving ice to his left hamstring in the dugout. A hydration break allowed both coaches to provide instructions to their teams.
As the match progressed, Egypt was in a position to finish in second place in their group, which would mean facing Australia in Dallas in the round of 32.
