The potential debut of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for India continues to be a major topic of discussion within the cricket community. As India prepares to face England in a five-match T20 International series starting on Wednesday, questions persist regarding when the young batter will get his opportunity.
Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has voiced his opinion, stating that Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket. De Villiers disagreed with India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate‘s approach, who had indicated that Sooryavanshi needs to follow the established process like other players. De Villiers suggested that the Ireland series would have been an ideal opportunity for Sooryavanshi to gain international experience, especially given Ireland‘s lower ranking.
Ten Doeschate had previously mentioned that Sanju Samson had a good IPL and that giving players a long run in the team is important for confidence. He acknowledged the excitement surrounding Sooryavanshi but reiterated the need for him to go through the same process as others. However, the assistant coach also stated that the 15-year-old appears ready for the demands of the game.
Debate over team selection
The debate intensified following India‘s 0-2 whitewash by Ireland. This result has led to speculation that the team management might consider drastic changes. The struggles of Sanju Samson in three consecutive innings have further fueled calls for Sooryavanshi’s inclusion. Samson’s twin failures against Ireland could provide an opening for Sooryavanshi to be paired with Abhishek Sharma, who scored 49 runs off 20 balls in the first T20I at Belfast.
Ishan Kishan also had a challenging two-match series against Ireland, being dismissed for 1 and 12. This performance could lead the management to consider benching either Samson or Kishan to make way for Sooryavanshi. However, concerns about the morale of the omitted player would need to be addressed.
Cricket legends such as Ravi Shastri, Michael Vaughan, and Alastair Cook had previously suggested that Sooryavanshi should have made his debut during the two-T20I series against Ireland. Conversely, Cheteshwar Pujara and Saba Karim believe that Sooryavanshi’s inclusion should not come at the expense of a proven performer.
Challenges for India’s batting unit
The inclusion of Sooryavanshi is not seen as a complete solution to India‘s batting issues. During the matches in Belfast, Indian batters struggled against pacers on challenging wickets, appearing uncomfortable when aggressive batting routes were blocked. This was evident in their pursuit of targets like 183 and 155, where impatience seemed to be a recurring issue.
England‘s bowling attack, featuring pacers like Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Saqib Mahmood, and Sonny Baker, along with spinners Aadil Rashid and Rehan Ahmed, is expected to present a significant challenge. The average T20I score at the Riverside Ground is 138, with a highest of 195 across eight previous matches, indicating a bowler-friendly environment.
India‘s new T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer, will be keen to avoid a second consecutive series defeat. The team will also need a more organised effort from its bowlers, especially the spinners Axar Patel, Suryansh Shedge, and Washington Sundar, who have been largely ineffective so far. The first match of the T20 International series against England is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
