Teenage Prodigy’s Unwavering Confidence
Kumar Sangakkara, the former Sri Lankan captain and current Rajasthan Royals head coach, recently shared an anecdote highlighting the remarkable self-belief of 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Speaking from the Sky Sports commentary box during the third Test match between England and New Zealand, Sangakkara recounted an incident from the IPL 2026 season that showcased the young player’s unique confidence.
During a crucial group encounter against the Lucknow Super Giants at Jaipur’s Sawai Mansingh Stadium, the Royals faced a challenging target of 221 runs to keep their playoff hopes alive. As Sooryavanshi prepared to open the batting, he reportedly winked at Sangakkara and stated, “Coach, don’t worry. It’s done.” This audacious reassurance was followed by an even more specific prediction to his senior teammates, Donovan Ferreira and Lhuan-dre Pretorius.
Sooryavanshi told them, “Listen you two, I’m going to hit 13 sixes today. After that, you just finish the job.” While he ultimately hit 10 sixes, scoring 93 runs off just 38 deliveries, his teammates initially thought he was joking. Sangakkara noted that they began counting down the sixes once they realized Sooryavanshi was serious about his prediction, illustrating the young batter’s exceptional confidence.
Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking IPL Campaign
Sooryavanshi’s IPL 2026 campaign was marked by several significant achievements. He played a key role in guiding the Rajasthan Royals to the playoffs and secured the Orange Cap by accumulating 776 runs. His performance also saw him break records previously held by other cricketers.
Beyond his batting prowess, Sooryavanshi also set a new record for the fastest batter in T20 history to reach 1,000 runs, achieving this milestone in 440 deliveries. He also became the first player to score 500 powerplay runs in a single tournament, demonstrating his ability to dominate early in an innings. His talent was further highlighted during a tri-series with the India A team in Sri Lanka, where he scored 94 runs off 29 balls in the final against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla.
The young batter is currently touring the UK with the senior national team after receiving his maiden T20I call-up. Although he was not selected for the starting XI in the series opener against Ireland in Belfast, an international debut for India is anticipated. If he debuts during the upcoming six T20Is in the UK, which includes five matches against England in July, he would become the youngest male player to debut for India in international cricket, surpassing a record held for 37 years.
Mental Strength and Future Prospects
Sangakkara believes that Sooryavanshi possesses a unique ability to handle the pressures associated with his rapid rise to fame. He emphasized that despite the spotlight and commercial opportunities that will come his way, Sooryavanshi remains grounded and focused on his love for batting and the game itself. Sangakkara noted that the young player is not solely consumed by cricket and maintains interests outside of the sport, contributing to his mental well-being.
Dinesh Karthik, the batting coach and mentor for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, also commented on Sooryavanshi’s exceptional batting skills. Karthik recalled how experienced pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood found it challenging to bowl against Sooryavanshi during the IPL, despite having specific plans. He highlighted Sooryavanshi’s ability to hit boundaries and rotate the strike, making him a versatile and difficult opponent for bowlers.
Sangakkara expressed confidence that Sooryavanshi will be a significant force in Indian cricket, world cricket, and franchise cricket. He believes that the support from his family and team, combined with his grounded nature, will enable him to manage the demands of fame effectively. The Rajasthan Royals discovered Sooryavanshi after an analyst recommended him at the age of 12, and his talent was evident when he confidently faced bowlers like Jofra Archer and Sandeep Sharma in a camp.
