Post-Match Incidents Draw Criticism
Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has openly criticised the behaviour of Argentina players following the World Cup final on Sunday, describing their actions as “intolerable” and “unacceptable.” The comments come as FIFA has initiated an investigation into the incidents that occurred immediately after Spain secured their second World Cup title.
De la Fuente recounted that he did not witness the confrontations in real-time, as he was engaged in celebrations with his team. However, upon reflection, he deemed the conduct of the Argentine players as something that “cannot be allowed.” He expressed his disappointment, particularly given his prior praise for Argentina’s players and their coach.
The incidents in question involved several Argentine players. Leandro Paredes reportedly clashed with Spain’s Eric García and Gavi at New York New Jersey Stadium. Additionally, Nahuel Molina was seen making contact with Spain captain Rodri. These events unfolded as Spain celebrated their 1-0 victory in extra time, which saw them dethrone the defending champions.
De la Fuente highlighted the exemplary conduct of his own players, who he said maintained their composure despite what he characterised as “acts of aggression” and “provocations.” He suggested that these situations could have escalated into more serious incidents if not for the restraint shown by the Spanish squad.
FIFA Investigation Underway
The scenes from the post-match period were widely circulated on social media platforms, drawing significant attention. In response, FIFA has launched an investigation to ascertain whether the incidents violated the world football governing body’s disciplinary code. A disciplinary prosecutor was tasked on Monday to report on the confrontations.
Despite the widespread documentation of these events, no sanctions have yet been imposed on any of the Argentina players. FIFA has not provided specific details regarding the scope of its investigator’s remit, nor has it indicated whether witness statements will be sought from Spain’s players or staff.
The disciplinary rules of FIFA permit a special prosecutor to request the initiation of disciplinary proceedings. This includes the authority to propose disciplinary measures against member associations, clubs, and individual players. However, FIFA has not set a timeline for any potential cases, and it remains unclear when any bans for Argentina players, if imposed, would take effect, as the team does not have competitive fixtures scheduled in the immediate future.
Further to the on-field altercations, there was also an incident involving Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala and Spain’s Dani Olmo. Ayala later apologised for his actions, describing his contact with Olmo as a shove rather than a punch.
During the medal ceremony, the Spain squad formed a guard of honour for the Argentina players as they approached the podium to receive their medals from US President Donald Trump. However, minutes later, when Rodri lifted the trophy, a significant portion of the Argentina squad reportedly turned their backs on the ceremonial moment, further adding to the tension of the post-match proceedings.
De la Fuente reiterated his praise for his team’s professionalism during an interview with Spanish public broadcaster TVE on Thursday, commending their behaviour in the face of aggression and provocation.
The investigation by FIFA will determine the consequences, if any, for the actions that transpired after Spain’s victory on Sunday.
