Suryakumar Yadav’s Potential Return
Despite being removed from the T20I squad and losing his captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav still has a clear route back to the Indian cricket team. This is contingent on his consistent performance in domestic cricket, according to a source within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The BCCI has not ruled out a comeback for Suryakumar Yadav, who is 35 years old, and he remains eligible for selection if he consistently scores runs in domestic matches.
A BCCI source stated that the doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open, even though he is not currently part of the team’s immediate plans. He was stripped of the T20I captaincy and dropped from the squad following a period of lower scores with the bat ahead of India‘s tours of Ireland and England.
India’s Recent T20I Performance
Following Suryakumar Yadav‘s removal, Shreyas Iyer was named the new T20I captain. However, India‘s performance in the format has seen a downturn under Iyer‘s leadership. The team suffered a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland, marking the country’s first-ever bilateral T20I series loss against the Irish. Subsequently, India faced a 4-0 series defeat to England in a five-match T20I series, with the opening game resulting in a no-result due to rain.
The defeat in England included a 56-run loss in the fifth T20I at Southampton, which sealed the 4-0 series outcome. Earlier in the series, India lost the fourth T20I by nine wickets, the third by 125 runs, and the second by four wickets. England‘s triumph marked their first bilateral T20I series victory over India in a multi-match contest. These results led to India losing their top position in the ICC T20I team rankings to England.
Calls for Suryakumar Yadav’s Return
Former spinner Moeen Ali has suggested that India should reinstate Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to a T20 World Cup triumph earlier this year. Ali believes that Suryakumar Yadav should remain a central figure in India‘s T20 plans, describing him as one of the best players globally. Ali compared his influence to that of Hardik Pandya, stating that such players have a positive impact on those around them.
Since taking over the captaincy, Shreyas Iyer has overseen six defeats in seven matches, with one game ending without a result. This period includes the recent losses to Ireland and England. Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector, defended the decision to replace Suryakumar Yadav, stating it was a long-term strategic move rather than solely based on recent performance dips. Agarkar acknowledged that while Suryakumar Yadav had been a successful captain, leading the team to a World Cup, there were ongoing discussions about the leadership change.
Moeen Ali emphasized the importance of keeping Suryakumar Yadav in the squad, stating, “You need him on. You keep Surya. Surya. I genuinely reckon you keep Surya. He’s one of the best players in the world.” He further added that removing a player of Suryakumar Yadav‘s calibre, especially one who led the team to a World Cup victory, might be a hasty decision given the subsequent decline in results. India will now focus on the ODI series against England, with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma expected to rejoin the squad.
