Tilak Varma on Batting Approach and Team Needs
Indian T20I vice-captain Tilak Varma has responded to recent criticism regarding his strike rate during the T20I tours of Ireland and England. Varma stated that his batting approach is always dictated by the team’s requirements and the specific match situation, rather than focusing on personal milestones or an aggressive strike rate from the outset.
During the tours, Varma accumulated 178 runs across seven T20Is, with a strike rate of 131.85. He registered two half-centuries: 55 against Ireland in the second T20I and 53 against England in the fifth and final T20I. Despite these performances, his approach in the middle overs drew scrutiny.
Ahead of India‘s upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, Varma clarified that he possesses the ability to attack from the first ball. However, he chooses his strategy based on the prevailing match conditions and what the team needs at that moment. He emphasised that adapting to different batting positions and overseas conditions often requires him to prioritise responsibility over chasing a high strike rate.
Varma explained his batting philosophy, highlighting that the team’s repeated top-order collapses during the Ireland and England tours often necessitated the middle order to rebuild the innings. This situation, he noted, made it impractical to play freely and accelerate immediately. He mentioned that India frequently lost four or five wickets within the powerplay or the first 10 overs in several matches during these tours.
He further elaborated, stating, “In this game, you have to bat in different positions, and especially in those conditions, it isn’t easy. At the same time, I’ve always said that I do whatever the team requires. If I have to grind it out for the team, I’ll do that. If I have to hit from ball one, I can do that as well.”
Varma stressed that playing for the country comes with significant responsibilities, and his mindset is to always consider the team’s situation. He added that attempting to accelerate recklessly after early wickets would not be a sensible approach. This strategic thinking, he indicated, is consistently on his mind.
Responsibilities as Vice-Captain and Team Plans
As the T20I vice-captain, Tilak Varma revealed that he is entrusted with specific responsibilities by the team management. He prioritises executing these plans over focusing on individual statistics. He stated that everything depends on the team’s immediate needs, which can include batting until the end of the innings or adapting to changing team plans based on the match situation.
Varma noted that the management provides him with certain responsibilities after careful planning, and his goal is to fulfil these duties. This commitment to team strategy influences his batting style, ensuring he plays according to the team’s overall objectives.
The 23-year-old left-hander acknowledged that while he scored runs, he faced criticism for not adapting quickly enough to match situations and for potentially slowing down the team’s momentum. However, he maintained that his decisions were always in line with what was best for the team given the challenging circumstances.
During the UK tour, India experienced T20I series defeats, losing 2-0 against Ireland and 4-0 against England. These results underscore the difficult conditions and strong opposition faced by the team. Varma’s role in rebuilding innings during these challenging periods was a key aspect of his performance.
He also highlighted the difference in conditions overseas compared to playing mostly in Asia over the past two years. Facing a strong team like England, especially after their performance in the T20 World Cup semi-finals, presented its own set of challenges and expectations. Varma emphasised the importance of remaining calm under pressure and fostering positive energy within the team, regardless of the results.
Looking Ahead to Zimbabwe Series
Looking forward to the upcoming series against Zimbabwe, Tilak Varma expressed that the recent tours have been a significant learning experience for the team. He indicated that the focus is now on moving forward, adhering to basic strategies, and performing well in the upcoming matches. The team aims to take the lessons learned from the previous series and apply them in Zimbabwe.
Under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer, India will be looking to regain momentum in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, which is scheduled to begin on July 23.
Varma also mentioned that many players have had sufficient domestic cricket and ‘A’ series experience leading up to this tour, suggesting they are prepared for the upcoming matches. He views the international stage as a continuation of their efforts, albeit on a larger platform.
The UK and Ireland tour saw Tilak Varma finish with an overall T20I strike rate of 131.85, scoring 178 runs off 135 balls. His tour included explosive cameos, such as a strike rate of 212.00 (53 runs off 25 balls) in the final T20I at Southampton.
