This new tradition will see FIFA present World Cup rings to the champions, mirroring a practice common in American sports, such as the NFL’s Super Bowl. A total of 30 rings will be allocated to the world champions, with an additional 1,996 rings made available for purchase by fans. Each ring will incorporate a miniature World Cup trophy into its design and feature an engraving on the band.
The customised rings will include the FIFA World Cup trophy on one side, while the other side will be tailored to reflect the identity of the champion team. Each ring will be individually numbered, custom-fitted, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Immediately following the final, the winning team’s captain and head coach will receive temporary championship rings during the celebrations. The final versions of the 30 winners’ rings will later be custom-made and officially presented to ensure a personalised fit, serving as a lasting memento of their World Cup triumph.
Presidential Attendance Confirmed
Donald Trump is confirmed to attend the final match and is expected to present the trophy. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had previously indicated Trump’s attendance, which was later corroborated by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. This will be Trump’s first attendance at any of the 102 World Cup games played so far in the tournament, having missed all of the USA’s matches before their elimination by Belgium in the last 16.
Trump has a history of attending major sporting events, including the Super Bowl, the US Open tennis tournament, the NBA finals, and the Ryder Cup. He also hosted the UFC at the White House during his two presidential terms. It is not uncommon for heads of state in host countries to attend World Cup finals, and the USA is co-hosting the tournament alongside Canada and Mexico, with the final two matches taking place in America.
The relationship between Infantino and Trump has been a notable point of discussion during this summer’s World Cup. This included the US president reportedly contacting the FIFA chief to request a review of United States striker Folarin Balogun’s red card. The subsequent decision to suspend Balogun’s automatic ban drew significant criticism, leading to questions regarding the integrity of the tournament.
Balogun was subsequently allowed to participate in the knockout stage match against Belgium, where the USA experienced a 4-1 defeat. There have been no other instances of red or yellow cards being suspended during this World Cup, despite appeals from nations like France and England for their own incidents to be reviewed.
Final Matches and Environmental Concerns
The final match between Argentina and Spain is scheduled for Sunday. Before that, England will play France in the third-place match on Saturday in Miami. Both of these final matches will be broadcast, with live text and radio commentary also available.
Despite a weather warning in New York concerning air quality due to wildfires in Canada, there is no indication that the final at MetLife Stadium will be impacted.
