France’s World Cup journey ends in semifinal

Kylian Mbappé was central to France’s impressive run, contributing significantly with eight goals and three assists before the semifinal. He was directly involved in nearly 69 percent of France’s goals, leading the tournament in scoring based on the assists tiebreaker. His contributions were evident across both the group stage and the knockout rounds, establishing him as a key player.
However, in the semifinal match against Spain, Mbappé found it challenging to create opportunities. He had the fewest touches among all forwards in the first half with 15. Spain’s strategy involved controlling the midfield and preventing Mbappé from receiving the ball in dangerous areas, thereby neutralizing his influence.
One notable moment involved Mbappé attempting to persuade referee Ivan Barton that a penalty, which led to Spain’s first goal, should not have been awarded. The foul by Lucas Digne on Lamine Yamal resulted in Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty kick in the 22nd minute, giving Spain the lead. Mbappé received a yellow card in the 86th minute after colliding with Spain’s goalkeeper Unai Simon.

The nature of the World Cup’s knockout format has been a point of discussion following France’s elimination. While France had shown consistent excellence over six matches, a single poor performance in the semifinal led to their exit. Despite the outcome, Mbappé remains in contention for the Golden Boot award, currently tied with Lionel Messi with eight goals each. Mbappé holds the tiebreaker with a 3-2 lead in assists. France will now play in a third-place match.
Mbappé acknowledged the defeat, stating, “When you don’t win … it’s part of the game. As the captain, I have to take all the responsibility, and I have no problem with that. We wanted to go to the final. We didn’t go.”
The 27-year-old Mbappé had previously scored eight goals in the last World Cup in Qatar, where France lost to Messi’s Argentina in a penalty shootout. France had won the World Cup eight years ago in Russia by defeating Croatia.
Spain midfielder Rodri commented on France’s capabilities, saying, “They (France) can punish you at every single moment, so I think the focus in every single minute was key in this game.”
The format of the World Cup, while leading to intense competition, means that France’s first defeat of the tournament carried more weight than their preceding six victories combined.
