Deschamps, who is scheduled to step down after 14 years in charge at the end of the tournament, stated that past results are irrelevant. He emphasised France‘s current level and their ambition to reach the final. If France wins, they will become only the third country to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, a feat previously achieved by West Germany and Brazil.
The French coach, who captained his nation to the World Cup title in 1998 and managed them to victory in 2018, acknowledged Spain as the favourites for the semi-final. He noted that Spain has conceded only one goal in six games during the tournament.
Spain‘s coach, Luis de la Fuente, downplayed the favourite tag, stating that both are great national teams. He stressed that the pressure to perform well for their country is inherent, regardless of external expectations. De la Fuente also quoted Roman general Julius Caesar, saying, “you can’t win without suffering,” a sentiment he agrees with.
Key Players to Watch
The semi-final features several star players expected to play crucial roles. For France, captain Kylian Mbappe has been in exceptional form, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in the tournament. He has scored in every knockout round so far and is a significant threat to Spain‘s defence. Mbappe will be looking to surpass Lionel Messi‘s goal tally in the race for the Golden Boot.
Michael Olise, another key player for France, has provided the most assists in the tournament. His partnership with Mbappe has been a highlight, showcasing his technical ability to create scoring opportunities. Ousmane Dembele has also been prolific, scoring five goals in the tournament, including a hat-trick in a group stage match against Norway and a goal against Morocco in the quarter-finals. The combined goal tally of Mbappe and Dembele stands at 13 goals in this World Cup.
For Spain, Lamine Yamal, an player, is considered a key attacking threat. Despite having one goal in the tournament, scored against Saudi Arabia, he was awarded player of the match in Spain‘s quarter-final win over Belgium and has recorded the most successful dribbles in the tournament. Yamal previously scored against France in the Euro 2024.
Mikel Oyarzabal is Spain‘s top scorer in this World Cup with four goals. He has a history of scoring crucial goals, including an 86th-minute winner against England in the Euro 2024 final. Mikel Merino, an attacking midfielder, has also made an impact as a substitute, scoring late winners against Portugal and Belgium. While he is not expected to start, Merino remains a significant option for Spain from the bench.
